Just had my car advertised for a couple of weeks in the Autotrader with no joy. Is it worthwhile trying again with a lower price or is it too close to Christmas to sell a car privately now?

We tend to be busy over this time so possibly too expensive ??
Post the details and I can give you the glass's guide price if you like.

T reg Mazda 626 Phoenix 2ltr. Climate Control & Leather int, with 117k on the clock. Had it advertised at £850 with a view to getting £700.

It looks overpriced to me - I was told my Mazda Xedos 6 with under 50K and 2 owners FSH is worth about £1000 so your 626 looks a tad dear @£850

Sounds like excellent value to me at £700, providing FSH and immaculate bodywork like mine. I bought my '98 S plate 2.0 SE hatch one year ago, with 97k miles and paid £995. So far it has cost me approx £500 for 4 new Michelin Energy tyres, and a full service with cambelt change. A belt change is due at 120k miles...I had mine done early just in case!
I rate mine very highly and if I knew anyone who was in the market for a lot of car for little money I would let you know.

I bought my last car in the week before Christmas.
The previous owner had died, and the family just wanted to see the back of it. It hadn't been used for a while, the tyres were under-inflated, the bumpers were scratched, it was dirty with a generous amount of bird-doo.
I think I got it for a reasonable price :>)

I think if you offered it at £595 no offers it should sell ( CAP sees it at £1125 off a forecourt with warranty and legal rights etc )
Good Luck.
PS big advert in rear window with phone number and price should do the trick especially if able to leave in a busy car park Asda etc)

I thought the trade almost went into hibernation during the run-up to Christmas, so it was a great time to buy - therefore a lousy time to sell. Most people don't look for second-hand goods at this time of year. But in the current climate, who knows?

What colour is it? Most pheonix's I see are ghastly gold.
Around £650 would seem reasonable. The people who would want to buy one of these will most likely know their cars, want reliability and want the toys that come as standard. The only draw back is the 626 is boring to drive, but if you want a 5 seater with large boot and climate, leather etc that can cruise well at 80, you can't go wrong.
I've had mine for over 5 years its now run up to 160k, it cost me £1650 then, is worth tuppence now, but everything still works. Only costs have been a cambelt change when bought, a new sump and servicing/tyres. I can't fault it in the slightest, I'd have another one when this one eventually gets a terminal fault that costs more than £300 to fix.
Also depends on where in UK you are, the value of cars can vary depending on the area.
Slight edit to post, Rob

I seem to have bought the only rusty 626 advertised! Both doors on the drivers side are going and seems to have lots of surface rust underbody! But it runs fine. Question is do I PX it for another one with better body or just run it till it dies?
Its a V reg facelift GSI with 87K, got the cambelt done as part of buying process, which I done via autotrader ( sent my Uncle to look at it...)
