I actually used to visit these forums many years ago before I could even drive, but came across it again today so thought I would re-join... Some of the discussions on here are really interesting, and I love talking about cars so hopefully I can add some of my wisdom to the debates, lol!

I'm Dan, 21 years old, student, and I drive a 57 plate BMW 116i. Previously I had a Ford Ka, which I had up until this summer when I had a run-in with a foreign lorry on the M40 :(

Love my Beemer and think it's the best looking/handling hatchback you can buy. I smile every time I look at and drive it. Any other 1-series drivers on here?

Anyway, hope to stick around.

Dan

Just realised how cheesy that sounded (the bit about smiling) but unfortunately it won't let me edit it so it has to stay...

Oh well!

A student with a year old Beemer?

I had to tear around in a 6 year old Fiat Regata in my day!

Have they increased student grants? Or did you win it in a poker match, as the great Student Grant himself claimed to have done when he arrived at University with a brand new Fiat Panda after Christmas? ;-)

I couldn't even afford driving lessons when I was a student. But then i thought seeing western europe and studying was more important than driving [and still is for me].

If you wanted a rear wheel drive you should have got a Lada.

Could this thread be merged with the 'Motoring Stereotypes' one :-)

It could certainly be a bit more welcoming!!

Anyway, from me, welcome back...

Cheers guys :D...

I afforded it through a combination of savings generated over the years from my internet businesses, and an interitance. I have wanted this car for years though, so to finally be able to afford it was awesome!

I am aware that it is very much a love/hate car. I looked at the 3-series but didn't really want a saloon, and prefered the styling of the 1er. It really is a superb drive, although not the fastest car in the world, but certainly able to keep up with other traffic, and very refined on the motorway. I love taking the backroad though because the handling really does come alive. They are not as expensive as you might think either if you do what I did and get an ex-demo from a main dealer, and the efficient dynamics stuff really is excellent and keeps the running costs low too.

Scandalous how student grants have been cut so much that students are reduced to slumming it like this. Wicked it is, wicked, that a student is forced to go around in such a low-powered BMW. BMW M5s for all students, that's what we need.

As I said I have run some highly successful internet businesses over the years and have worked hard at them. I have a dad who is disabled through no fault of his own, and quite frankly after what myself and my family have gone through over the past few years I decided I would treat myself. Grants don't come into it mate...

Talking of student grants I still owe them £10k! Well the student loan company.
'New Old' Member Dropping By - Lud
Their debt collectors will be after your Fiesta Rattle (if they can prise it from the hands of the garage that is)...

:o}
'New Old' Member Dropping By - Rattle
You have to earn £16k to start paying it off, it just comes out of income tax. However in the summer the recession affected my business hard so had to stop making voluntery payments, its all kicked off again now so I can afford to stay paying them back.

If I started university a year later I would have qualified for grants and would not have needed the loan, so always feel a bit bitter about that.

I didn't mean to sound heartless, Rattle. My generation and the one just after it were very privileged by today's standards. Only the very rich and/or thick had to pay full whack at university in the fifties and sixties.

By the time my youngest daughter was doing her tertiary education though this clawback system was operating, and she too has a large debt.

Wouldn't they be safer in a 4x4? Something like an X5 ;o)

My crystal ball says he plays tennis. A Tennis Player no less.
'New Old' Member Dropping By - dan1
That's funny, because I actually do love tennis :o

Other hobbies include getting drunk, music production, and gymming it.... lol.
'New Old' Member Dropping By - Rattle
Not getting drunk behind the wheel of a BMW I hope!

And while I mention that don't get caught the morning after. I too like a drink on a saturday night so don;t drive till on a Sunday till at least 14-15 hours, that way my 6-7 pints should be completly out my system.

Welcome back :)

I can't remember who you used to be though - not the guy who had the brand new MINI Cooper and wanted to be a car salesman??
