TBH this is a much better offer than the Dodge one -- for one, you can buy one car for a little under eight grand, and it must also be said that the Magentis is a much better car than the Avenger.

The only thing that potentially knackers this deal is the existence of £6000 Vectras. Still, £8000 for a brand-new, decent Mondeo-class saloon isn't bad going.

Where can you buy a Vectra for 6k and is new/pre-reg?

For 8 grand I'd take a 12 month old Mondeo. Sorry, but the Magentis is really not very nice to drive.

Really? Have you driven one?

HJ reckoned that the previous Magentis was about on-par with the contemporary Vectra. Are you saying that, with the new car, Kia took a step back against the newer Vauxhall?

The way I see this deal is that it should put quite a number of these cars on the road in canny areas like my native North East, which will mean that there are plenty of cheap examples to choose from in three years. The old model sells for about £2500 at 3 or 4 years old, and quite honestly that looks seriously tempting to me -- effectively a Mitsubishi Galant running gear and chassis for peanuts.

I know that I have to find cars for two sales type people shortly. These are far better bets than a new Astra.

Bit ambitious, Forddirect ones are nearer £12/14k.

And 6 month old Vectras at £6k.At Autopoint they Vectras for £6.5 with 12000 miles both have to be good value if thats the type of car your after and unlike the Magentis they may just be worth something in two years.

Andy -- a car loses more than 60% of its value in six months, and you're playing the resale value card?!?

Seems to me that the Magentis holds its value just fine, looking at the figures on AutoTrader. For a Mondeo-sized car that only had a list price of around £11K three years ago, and which in the real world was selling for seven grand AT DEALERS at that time, to still be worth £2.5K when the £15K Mondeo and Vectra (and Primera for that matter) are only worth £4000 doesn't seem too savage to me.

But yes, the Vectras are a steal, and if I had six grand in my pocket I'd be looking at one seriously. The market is absolutely stupid at the moment -- people are prepared to pay more for a 3 year old Yaris than a year-old Vectra. More fool them.

Peter Vardy has new Vectras advertised for £8999, i bet you could haggle a bit more off them too!

I'm no expert but thought it was generally accepted that list prices for Fords are pretty much notional; that most of the new go to fleets and lease; that individual retail sales are not too common. So Fords coming into the used market at amazing prices isn't anything new.

The Broadspeed site is interesting to look at. Essentially they seem to be putting buyers in touch with sellers and taking a fee (£299?) for doing that if the deal goes through. IIRC Kia sometimes pre-register lots of cars at the factory and knock them out through dealers. Just a bit more aggressive in price-cutting right now, maybe.

Anyone know if any of these amazing deals are those where it takes months to get the V5?

Which planet have you seen them sell, most dealers wouldn't touch a Magentis with a barge pole they must be one of the worst sellers in history in europe as can be proved by the number you don't see on the road.Given the choice between a Vectra/Mondeo and a Magentis(which is a 80's GM under the skin)which would a sensible person choose.

Beside the point -- the fact is, as you have demonstrated, that the Vauxhall loses 60% of its value in six months. The Magentis is, factually, little worse in this regard, in percentage terms. Nor is it significantly worse after three years -- £2500 from £10,500 vs £4000 from £15,500 list prices. Neither is exactly stellar but the Vauxhalls are a joke in terms of resale value and that was the crux of your comment in the first place. Kias are as well (at least from that era), but they're comparable rather than much worse to Vauxhalls.

Perhaps you might consider getting your facts straight before pontificating. The 1990s Daewoo Leganza might have been an 80s GM under the skin -- although even then they suffered from the same GF50 tensioner issues that *90s* GMs had -- but Kias never have been, and never will be, GM-based. The 1999 Magentis is, to all intents and purposes, a Hyundai Sonata, which at the time was based on the 1995 Mitsubishi Galant, but with a then-new Hyundai Delta engine which was a damn sight newer in design than the GM Family 2, decent though that engine is, which dates to the mid-1970s.

A *sensible* person would not go near a Vectra unless it was very cheap -- sound familiar?

Yes I have, I've had them as rental cars. I'm surprised about HJs comment. The Vectra is also not particularly nice to drive, and definitely not a patch on the Mondeo, but the Magentis is horrible. It feels like an early 80s japanese car.

That's novel; I'm surprised the other manufacturers haven't tried this!

Hi all,

Just to add my two penny worth !

Has a look at a Magentis today, looked good and appeared to be well built, full of toys and a decent warranty as well.
Price was good from a dealer at around £10k for the LS, said they would talk to Kia about matching the internet price.
Test drive proved the car to be just as good on the road and yes I have driven the latest Mondeo and Vectras, I didnt think there was a lot of differance.
The Magentis appeared to be much better built than the current Vectra.

Are we talking about the old one or the new one?

I've driven the newer one but not the newer one: the newer one reminded me of a Toyota Avensis, and while that car is no ball of fire that is hardly a damning indictment either. Well made and quiet with decent, though dull handling. Not significantly worse to drive than my current Primera, which was considered a worthy rival to the Mondeo in its day.

The older one -- well to be fair it's an old design now (it was released in 1998 in Korea). You have to compare it with the Vectra that was around at that point -- and it'd have to be pretty bad to be nasty compared to that car. I always HATED Vauxhalls of that period. I have a late-90s Daewoo as a second car, and everything I dislike about that car (numb steering, horrid gearchange) is shared with my disdain for the MkIII Astra of the day.
