If you want a tip, I used to put the belt on except on the top of the main crank pulley where I would pull it on as much as possible, and then wedge dry screwed up kitchen paper towel between the top of the crank pulley and (4) and bottom of waterpump (5) to hold the belt in place. Then start the engine it used to ride on usually first time - the tensioner will take up the shock, so it won't damage the belt.

,,thanks a million,,that pic is just what i needed,,,,i didnt realise the belt went through the tensioner,,that was what was throwing me,,i had a foot of belt left over,,,, i had assumed the upper bearing on the tensioner pushed down on the belt to tension it,,thanks again,,james,
