2005 1.2 Change water pump with cambelt? - Rattle
My freinds Clio has now reached 57k and I think its time it needs a new belt, does the cambelt on this engine drive the water pump if so should the pump be changed? The car dosn't currently use any water and there is no noises coming from the pump.

Thanks my friend has been doing research too and has come to the same conclusion, this is the quotes we are getting:-

Renault dealer O
£480 (cambelt and water pump change)

Renault dealer M
£370 (cambelt and water pump change)

Renault Specialist S
£245 (cam belt change and said no need to replace water pump???)

All of these seem really high, my dad the Escort cambelt changed for £160 though that was back in 2003.

How much should this cost roughly inc the water pump? I know on my Fiesta I could have a brand new cylinder head fitted for the less than £500 :(.

Thats because its old technology and easy to work on - belt, tensioner and pump on our 12 year old 214 will be costing less than £150 next month when its due, whearas my 5 year old Audi A4 cost over £500 for the same work. My MGTF needs a belt etc next year due to age, not mileage (5 years but done 12,000 miles) and that will be almost £600!

The cheapest cars to run when it comes to maintenance, service and repairs is something from before the turn of the millenium!!

I changed my cambelt and water pump(which was shot) on a 97 plate megane in summer at a reputable garage for £180 all in!

If the water pump is driven by the Cam belt then change it, water pumps are relatively cheap and should the water pump go after the new belt is fitted at best you will have to go through the whole expense again, at worst if it jams it could break the cam belt or cause the cam belt to jump a few teeth thus causing damage to the head, I have just been quoted £300 from a reputable independent garage for timing belt change including new pulleys, Hydraulic tensioner and water pump on my 2.0ltr 20v Audi A4 so I would imagine a 1.2 Clio will be a lot cheaper.

Why not leave it until the head gasket blows and replace the lot in one go? :-)
