Diesel van engine reliability - john farrar
I assume that some dielsel powered vans use car derived power units. I also assume that they are bought using the head rather than the heart and that they experience much less TLC during their life. Do any vans use common rail engines, or come to that VAG PD units?
If so are their any stats/experiences regarding their reliability etc?

Lots of vans use common rail engines. The Vauxhall Vivaro / Nissan Primastar / Renault Trafic use the Renault 1.9 dCi engine, Mercedes Sprinters use the Mercedes CDI unit, and the Transit uses the TDCi, all in various states of tune. The VW vans use 1.9 and 2.5 TDI PD units.

To me, this is what vindicates the common rail engine. If they were the bundles of doom and expense that many suggest, they simply wouldn't work in a van, both from the abuse point of view, and the fact that excessive downtime / poor reliability in a van is simply not tolerated by most operators. Lots of people would have had a disastrous experience with the first gen common rail diesel vans and flocked to VW, or bought older vans. The fact is, they haven't. There are starship mileage common rail diesel powered vans all over the roads of Britain which still perform well.

Cheers

In vans is the best place for them. High mileages in a short time and almost zero chance of being mis-fuelled. Perfect for the job.
