ive had my 1.2 sxi corsa for 2 and abit years its been back to the garage 2 times already 1st for abs recall and secondly when it was there they smashed the back of it so had to back again to the body shop..and now at 31k miles the camshaft has snapped in two.im in a sticky situation because the car has no records of service...am i rite in thinking vx should foot the 1000 pound repair bill because there is no way i am paying. vauxhall used to be my preferd car but not for much longer i feel unless they help me..it could of been alot worse because i was driving it with my wife and grandson at the time lucky was only doing 40 .... help ...

Are you saying you've had the car more than two years and never had it serviced or that it was simply serviced outside of the Vauxhall dealer network?
If it's the former then I'm afraid you can forget it, Vauxhall will use your negligence in maintenance to excuse what is probably a manufacturing fault on their part. You won't have a leg to stand on.
If it is the latter and the block exemption rules have been met then Vauxhall may be more ameniable, although it's a grey area with the "years 2 and 3 optional dealer warranty".
If you have had it serviced OK and it is now 3+ years old (55 reg?) then some goodwill is possible if you get in touch with Vauxhall.
|
Before any one can comment and help you need to say if it has a full service history (even if you then need to prove this). If you've had it 2+ years then can we assume it was at least serviced at least annually when you have had it?
If the camshaft has snapped then a major failure surely. But if they have any reason to object to footing the bill they might.
So has it been serviced according to the necessary schedule?

it was serviced at 22 k and was going in shortly for main dealer service as insp lite came on ..i would take full blame if it was hammered but i rarely go above 50 mph

i rarely go above 50 mph
Mechanical sympathy is commendable, but to be honest you shouldn't have to consider "taking the blame" anyway. A car is designed to be driven at all road speeds and the engine to be revved fully on a frequent basis (when warm, at least). Driving sub-50mph or driving over 80mph all day long isn't really going to help or harm things either way. That's what they're designed to do! Or at least, that's what they should do if it all works ok!

its 2 mnths over 3years old i was ill for very long time and could not afford to pay main dealer prices for a service so had a friend whos a mechanic do it for me..i no i should of gone to dealer but u dont expect a new car to go so badly wrong..
|
Sorry to hear that, but if he didn't use OEM (original spec) parts and wasn't working in a VAT registered capacity to stamp the service book, then I'm afraid Vauxhall will be able to easily duck out of this one.
Sorry, but even though it probably is a manufacturing fault, there's unlikely to be any goodwill from Vauxhall. Doesn't stop you trying mind.

Can we assume the first service was stamped and it's only this one that's missing. Could still try with Vauxhall for some gesture to meet some costs - camshaft snapping sounds more like a fault at manufacturing time.

sounds more like a fault at manufacturing time.
Yep, you know that, I know that and Vauxhall probably know that. But missing service history is a "Get out of jail free" card for Vx to absolve themselves of any responsibility. Annoying but true. Still worth a punt though, but I wouldn't want to build up expectations at this stage...
|
surley this should be a recall issue? i cant believe there are so many with same problem
|
Recalls are only required for clear cut safety issues (for instance the ABS issue your Corsa went back for), the best you can hope for is that enough fuss is raised that Vauxhall are embarrassed into taking action, much like they were with the Vectra/Signum handbrake issue.
|
i should think that a camshaft snapping would be seen as a safety issue imagine if someone is driving at 70 on motorway and it happens..my car is being taken to vx garage tomorrow so the service manager can see it himself then talk with vx on my behalf so fingers crossed..ii think somthing would be better than nothing and if i get no joy ill prob write to watchdog

Hi you replied to my post about my camshaft snapping. If you look there, I left a message and the administrator has said they will swap our details if you're ok with that?
I was driving at 70mph when it went!!
|
If you go to my other message, the one you posted on. the administrator says if you cick 'report this message as offensive' and put you're happy to swap they'll sort it out.
We might both have more chance if we can prove this is becoming a common and dangerous problem. I do have full VX history so they can't use that one in this case.

all done thing is i havent but still shouldnt snap anyway
|
Details swapped. Sorry about delay watching Spooks - can't do two things !
|
changed ur name?
No, it's just that there is more than one moderator. The sticky post "Welcome to The Backroom. Please Read" explains who we are, among other things.
ps, yes, I'm one as well ;o)

Hithere , on friday my EMS light came on and within seconds a noise started under the bonnet. Called out the AA to a dealer and i have a snapped cam shaft and need a new engine.
How can this happen.the car is 3 years old and just out of warranty. 30,000 miles. The dealer said there was no oil and it is my fault!.
I dont buy this and googled the problem . What a suprise !!loads of similar stories.
I have sent an email to watchdog.

Murphy's law? Cars go wrong all the time, it just hurts more than if it was still in warranty.
Can you be sure the oil levels were OK before the camshaft snapped? When were they last checked?
OR Is there no oil as the dealer claims or are they just wiggling out of it?
Good luck either way, hopefully Vauxhall will contribute if you've got full service history and you find a dealer willing to co-operate.
