Went into a Chrysler Jeep dealer yesterday and was quite surprised to see that although the Jeeps were shod with Goodyear Wranglers, the Chrysler Avengers and Sebrings were wearing Khumho rubber. I expected to see Goodyear or Firestone but Khumho? Or am I just a tyre snob? ;-)

There are many other such comments and tests, whilst the manufacturer has been regularly mentioned in these forums.

People used to wonder not so long ago about Ford using Hankook tyres on some of its new vehicles, forgetting the Michelin connection.

We put Kumho's on my dads, brilliant tryes for the money. They are actually better than some of the entry tryes of the better known brands. VW have fitted Kumho's to their Polo.

I think there is a big difference to the likes of say Kumho and Tigar,

Thanks, Stuartli, learnt something there. Strangely enough, a Mustang I rented in Las Vegas last year was shod with Michelins yet had a full size Maxxis spare in the trunk (sorry, boot!) Seems the eastern tyre manufacturers have come a long way from making bicycle and wheelbarrow tyres......

I have bought Kumhos - very pleased with them.

As I previously posted
Well it would appear that Mazda on their concept car Furai , certainly do not consider Kumho as a minor brand else they would hardly deploy them as in :-.

I would certainly choose khumo over firestone.

The worst tyres I've ever fitted to a car came from a well known 'premium' brand, since when I've always been more open minded towards budget brands.

I can certainly endorse fitting the Khumo brand for durability and handling...fitted a set to a Grand Vitara in 2003 and have just replaced the front tyres with same brand after 35k miles re outer edges were just starting to show evidence of normal wear...the rear tyres would appear to be good for at least a further 10k miles.

Kumhos are not a budget brand, and are indeed considered a premium brand in many countries. They are around the same price as the common brands, but because they don't advertise and sound foreign, people assume they are budget.

Manufacturers don't fit "cheap" tyres-they fit tyres which meet their acceptance standards wherever they come from-they have to-it's called "product liability".
Budget tyres on new cars? - quizman
Chrysler probably got the Khumos on a BOGOF deal. They try to sell their cars in this way, don't they?
Budget tyres on new cars? - captain chaos
Perhaps they're pitching them at the same price they fetch in the U.S. When I was over there a brand new Dodge Ram truck would set you back $14,000.00. Over here it would cost £25,000.00. Rip-off Britain....

rubber. I expected to see Goodyear or Firestone but Khumho? Or am I just a

You dont want firestones on your Ford explorer. Many dead americans will testify to that.
Budget tyres on new cars? - captain chaos
That would take some doing.... ;-)
Budget tyres on new cars? - Altea Ego
Thats true - it would.

IIRC the whole Explorer/Firestone fiasco came about at the Explorer design stage when there was an argument between the engineers and stylists over the design which left the Explorer with a high centre of gravity. To make the vehicle more stable Ford recommended a reduction in tyre pressure which left the tyre susceptible to heat build up and tyre failure by way of tread seperation. Ford blamed Firestone and vice versa. They haven't learned anything since the Pinto then........

So budget tyres wouldnt have made any difference then,,,

Chrysler/GM & Ford are in parlous state of finance (according to the papers)

They are more concerned about the wheels coming off the company, not just the brand of tyres fitted to the cars.

Massive problem here with Fortuna drivers, and the tyres fitted as OEM.
Toyota is going to take a kicking replacing a LOT of tyres after some serious deterioration of roadholding characteristics reported by many drivers!
