IIRC the whole Explorer/Firestone fiasco came about at the Explorer design stage when there was an argument between the engineers and stylists over the design which left the Explorer with a high centre of gravity. To make the vehicle more stable Ford recommended a reduction in tyre pressure which left the tyre susceptible to heat build up and tyre failure by way of tread seperation. Ford blamed Firestone and vice versa. They haven't learned anything since the Pinto then........

Chrysler/GM & Ford are in parlous state of finance (according to the papers)
They are more concerned about the wheels coming off the company, not just the brand of tyres fitted to the cars.

Massive problem here with Fortuna drivers, and the tyres fitted as OEM.
Toyota is going to take a kicking replacing a LOT of tyres after some serious deterioration of roadholding characteristics reported by many drivers!
