04 1.5 (dci) 65 bhp an electrical problem - pembsflyer
My 04 1.5 65bhp dci renault Clio engine maintenance light has come on. The local Indy has identified the fault as being the EGR. He was cleaned it - ok for a few days, replaced it, no improvement light still on after resetting on the computer. He says Renaults are notorious for electrical faults and thinks there is a wiring problem.
Where should he look for this wiring fault.
Also the left side air bag light has come on could this be associated?

What code did he find?
04 1.5 (dci) 65 bhp an electrical problem - pembsflyer
he just said it was the egr. Would there also be a code i can ask tmox

There are many different codes that mention the EGR or it's position sensor - not all mean that the valve assembly is actually faulty.

Engine wiring looms are very short-lived on Clios. A broken wire is a very real possibility. Belling all relevant wires through to the ECU is the next step.

is this a job for a good indy or dealership? is the car safe to drive?

The EGR valves are not expensive as a matter of course replace it,you get the same effect with the glowplugs another Renault weakspot. If the EGR is fouling up then you need to look at oil seals especially the the turbo as what appears to be a small problem can have a catastrophic outcome also it needs to be at main agents hooked upto their computer unless your man is a Renault specialist. If you do a search on the site you will find all the info you require in abundance.

have seen on another forum that there is an electrical connector under the passenger seat that can affect the air bag and engine maintenance light could this be a simple answer?
04 1.5 (dci) 65 bhp an electrical problem - Screwloose

The airbag is completely separate from the engine management; so that's a no.

nothing like hoping for a cheap fix!!

I think establishing the exact fault code/description is the next step.

The airbag fault is very common. As the previous poster said it is the connection under the passenger seat. When the seat slides back and forth on three door models the leads sometimes get caught and it brings up the fault light on the dash. Have a fiddle with the leads under the seat and the light normally goes out. Have a look at Renaultforums.co.uk for more info.

Update: Indy has replaced egr valve and cleaned soot away. Maintenance light still comes on, so decided to take it to the dealer and put it on their diagnostic. Fault code came up DS 027 dif 4. The technician says that although the egr was replaced and cleaned he still felt the egr needed investigation and on many occasions has found that carbon deposits have not been properly cleaned and even the smallest amount of carbon can cause the valve not to open or shut.
The new egr valve was ordered through a motor factors and so may not be a genuine part-might this be relevant?
I have asked the dealership to investigate the egr valve to see whether it was cleaned properly and report back before undertaking any further work. Do the forum think this is a good course of action?
Also the air bag light is a side air bag and the technician acknowledged the common fault under the seat but said this did not apply to the side bag as the wiring is seperate and away from under the seat
They have quoted £75approx to sort the air bag which would include the diagnostic charge.
I value any comments

Renault technician looked at the egr valve and was happy it was cleaned well (Incidentally indy had replaced old egr coz there was no change to symptoms on using new egr) He replaced it and wiped the fault code " by going into the computer system deeper than he thought the indy could" into the mainboard or something?
Gas exhaust light now stays off.......for now.
I reported back to the indy for interest and he said there are two ways into the systems one through the car type and other through the european.... system. He was only able to access this car via the car type, might this explain why he was unable to wipe the fault code?
The only puzzling thing now is why did the light come on in the first place bearing in mind the original egr valve is back in and there was very little coking around the valve seating

Yes; it's quite likely that an '04 has both Renault and the useless EOBD protocols. It was more likely that your garage couldn't clear the matching Renault code to the one he could see.

As to why it came on; then we're straight back to what the exact code was for. There isn't an "EGR valve" code - there are dozens of them, all referring to different aspects of it's function. If, for example, the code had mentioned an EGR valve position sensor malfunction, then that would have indicated a different cause to a "low flow" code.

Thanks screwloose I'm beginning to understand there are different codes for different aspects/faults of the EGR?!
The fault code was DS 0027 dif(?) 4
this was all i was told should a Renault garage be able to tell me more from their diagnostic machine

That code is only an internal link inside the Renault dealer's machine; it accesses and displays a page of info from the current CD that's loaded onto it. Doesn't really help unfortunately.

Hello, i have a clio d6d dci van. i also have the same sort of problem.
it smoked alot when i first got it and being a little bit mechanical minded i took the EGR of and cleaned soot out, but when put back together, it would fire, but no start.
Could anyone help on this matter?
Thanks Jordan
