Well the question is, are they any good? Any recommendations as to make? Specialist fitters will rubbish them with tales of the alarms going off for no reason and waking all the neighbours. They would wouldn't they, but maybe they have a point. Trouble is professionally fitted alarms are anywhere from £200. Whereas I can get an alarm from Maplins for £40.

why do you need one? they are a waste of time.

I fitted one once to a Citroen ZX. It was a £50 Maplins one. Not particularly difficult to fit, but awkward as you need to translate wiring diagrams to physical circuits and get at it all. I chose one of the coldest days of the year to fit so that made it worse...
It worked ok, but the shock sensor did make it go off a lot.

Can't really see the point in them. If you leave anything on display the drugged up dope head is not bothered if the car has an alarm or not, a brick through the window and he is on his toes before the alarm even goes off!! Prevention is far better then the cure where car alarms are concerned.

most false alarms will be due to terrible diy instalations
you need to do some reaseach about fitting it, soldered and heatshrinked joints and route the harness suitably so it cant easily be yanked out or messed with
have a look on ebay...theres some big brand name ones for okay money , cobra , toad , clifford etc

The only reason I have an alarm on the bike is that the insurance company insist on it.
So - it has to be a proper one, professionally fitted.

The reason I thought of getting an alarm is because close by I have got neighbours from hell. I've now got a respectable looking motor and I want to deter the son from putting a dent in the door with his boot or breaking a window. I need to witness such an event and by having an alarm I might just see him running off. Also they are careless parkers and think nothing of bumping into me if the gap is tight. If I see it happen I'm out of the house like a storm trooper but it's rare that I see it. With an alarm I could at least catch them bumping my car.
So the Maplins one goes off too easily in which case that's out. How about Sparkrite? Maybe I should settle for a red led light on the dash with some alarm stickers in the windows.

Even proffesionally installed alarms can be troublesome, the one I have randomly dissabled itself and unlocked all the doors. It took another proffessional istaller and a bit of detective work by myself to get to the bootm of it.
