just as well it was mid engined then...otherwise where would the engine have gone? I know they're supposed to go sideways nowadays (the engines) in an impact, but you wouldn't guarantee it in those pics would you

I read the article, and looking at all the pictures in the gallery, thought what is a 'stobie pole'
Well, according to wikipedia, - "They are also "car proof", causing enormous amounts of damage to vehicles when collided with."
Can't doubt the veracity of wikpedia on this occasion ;-)
You have to wonder what speed they were going. Very definitely Ferrari 0, Pole 1

I really like cars, I really do, but this really made my day Butler. Laughs all round the office.

Guess the elf 'n' safety brigade hasn't quite made it down under then!
Really surprised to see immovable street furniture, although as they are for high voltage lines would expect is to reduce risk of these coming down.

>Bruce Colwell, 60, saw the Ferrari "whiz" down Walkerville Tce and turn right on to >Landsdowne Rd minutes before the crash happened.
>"It looked like he (the driver) was doing about 150km/h," he said.
>Police were investigating the cause of the crash. It was not known if charges would be laid.
Err thats a tough call

How fast were they going for that damage to occur - very fast but how fast!
They were lucky to not be seriously injured from the deceleration forces alone.
A comment above about engines meant to go sideways. Before the days of airbags I always thought the Audi Procon-Ten (spelling?) system was clever. The engine carried on moving pulling the steering wheel away from the driver. Meant Audi last to use airbags.

Oh dear!
Locally, last week a young scamp by the name of Anton Rupert borrowed daddy's car, and wrote it off.
Ok, so Mr Rupert senior is worth a few billion, but how does one replace a Ferrari F50?!?
And knowing the road where he took it off - the Helshoogte Pass - it appears he was well out of his limitations, seeing as how he pranged it in corner #2...
Google "rupert ferrari f50" and see what happens...

I would agree. I was on that road last month dodging baboons.
A thumbnail phto of the results.

I feel sure it will be rebuilt as no more LHD cars can be imported.

I was dodging baboons today - in a brick built building with a Coat of Arms on it. :-(

Try a different pub maybe ?

Only kiddin' - Court presumably?

Yes - I hate certain types of people - yes I know I'm stereotyping. White track suited gimp that calls me "blood" or uses the word innit (when he doesn't mean "inside it") will get a fat lip.
Back on topic - propose a SA trip in 2010 and would be interested in some local nous.

SOLICITOR SHOT DEAD IN COURT AFTER ASSAULT ON 'PEOPLE'S MAGISTRATE'
... The advocate, whose name has been withheld for, er, legal reasons, was seen to become agitated during a consultation at the Bench and shortly afterwards seized one of the magistrates by the throat. He was immediately shot dead by court ushers, who have been armed since last February's debacle in the Divorce Appeal Court involving that nasty singing woman and her film director husband, in which sixteen people died and thirty-seven were injured.
The Magistrate, Mr Darren Toerag-Williams, appointed under the outgoing government's 'people's magistrates' scheme, was unhurt, but indicated his intention to sue the new government for substantial compensation. 'I've been dissed good and proper,' he told the Daily Garbage. 'In front of everyone. Listen, Blood, that were well out of order, innit? I'm entitled to some wages, knowImean?'

Around a certain global sporting event, perhaps?
I'm sure between Henry k, myself and a few others with local knowledge, we can point out some nice places to visit, as well as some roads where you can do some tests with one of Mr Hertz's finest ...

Stobie poles are renowned for being crash-proof. tinyurl.com/5aucjh

Here in Vega$, people like to crash their cars into palm trees--I can't tell you how many times I've come across accident scenes where the car went up over the sidewalk and head on into a tree trunk, the most recent one being just last week. A three, four foot thick tree trunk stops your car very effectively.
