do you have no clearances on any of the valves? make a note of what you have got before you start. the shims are under the buckets, sat on a recess you don't need to touch the springs and it's likely they'll stick in the buckets when you remove them. wipe the top of each bucket and label with a marker pen before removing it (i normally just go 1 to 8 from left to right) then wipe and label each shim before removing that. you'll find that if you swap one of the known good shims into the valve with no clearance you will be able to get some sort of clearance to make your calculations from. (ie. if 1 has no clearance then try shim 3 in it's place and repeat measurement) once you've got a clearance on each valve you'll be able to do the relevant maths to figure out what new parts you need, you'll just need to remember the thickness of the shim you swapped to make the clearance.

The shims are above the buckets (the cams act directly on them) on this engine and they will come out with the camshaft in place.

Work methodically, recording all results and the procedure is quite simple. The shim thicknesses are engraved on their undersides, but a micrometer is frequently needed as the markings wear off.
