When I check out the HJ site at home or at work, it incessantly tries to hawk me a POS Dell Laptop.
Is this courtesy of HJ, or is it adware on both PCs ?
Cheers.

I've never had this on any PC I use to access HJ, so sounds like it may be at your end. I use Spybot and Ad-Aware (both free) to keep my PCs free of stuff like this. Normally run both of them about twice a week. Good luck

That Dell pop-up ad is the only one across all thse sites I use that gets past the s/w on my PC . On the one hand as it's the only one I'm not too bothered. On the other, it is so irritating that I'll never buy another Dell laptop, and I have bought and recommended them in the past. Never again though...
I wonder why its not possible to opt-out of junk on-line advertising; you can cut out unwanted junk mail by registering with MOPS (or whatever is called), and likewise for unwanted telephone calls with TOPS, both of which are extremely effective IME.

I get this Dell pop-up but only when/if I go on line at work - no problems on either of my 2 home computers. That said, it isn't the end of the World and if it was down to HJ and earned him some money I wouldn't object. This must be the best free site, info, news and views, updates from the Police, solicitors and Screwloose et al - one pop up is nothing really, IMO

- one pop up is nothing ........
Agreed. They pop up and if I don't like 'em I just pop 'em down.

I useFirefox, no pop-ups at work or home.
I do find the targetting of some of the ads to the right here a little odd though - I think there was one a week or two ago for fashions for the 'larger' lady....!
|
It's the only thing that evades the popup blocker of my IE at work. It's a popup, not adware.
|
|
Something odd has happened in the last 2 days, before that i would get one Dell pop up per visit, i have just had 5 appear in the time its taken me to get this written, now 7.
|
|
I'm also getting multiple copies this morning!!!!!
|
If I disable the latest IE7 pop up blocker the Dell advert gets through.
Otherwise the pop up blocker works OK.
Maybe a security update is needed for your IE7?
|
|
I get this everytime I 1st look at a thread on HJ, don't get it on any other website at work or at home.
|
In IE7, click on Page in the Toolbar to bring down a menu. Click on Web Page Privacy Page Policy>Privacy Report tab>Pop Blocker>Settings.
Configure to stop pop-ups on whichever websites you nominate.
|
Thanks for that, Stuart - I thought I knew my way around the IE settings but that's one corner I hadn't explored...
Of course, as commented above, one doesn't begrudge HJ one or two little earners, but these Dell things do begin to grate.

|
Yep a big thanks Stuartli, not as i know the first thing about PC's, cured now. I ended up with 12 of the things at one point.

I have pop-up blocking on by default, and this site is definitely not excluded, yet I currently have 51 dell advert pages open. It's happened before, and its stopped happening before.

Just add www.utarget.co.uk to the list of sites blocked in your "hosts" file:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file
pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/
Note: You can use SpyBot?s Built-in Hosts File Management Tool to check the contents of your Hosts file:
Open SpyBot S&D and switch to Advanced Mode by going to the Mode menu and selecting Advanced Mode.
Click on the Tools button in the left margin of the Spybot window.
From the list of tools, select Hosts File. Spybot will show all of the blocked web sites entries in your computer?s hosts file.
|
How to edit your Hosts file:
www.accs-net.com/hosts/HostsToggle/
or
Get and install the free HijackThis v2.0.2
www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_to...q
Go to the Misc Tools tab:
www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_to...g
[item 3 on that page.]
Click on "Open Hosts File Manager", then follow the steps to edit the file.
Add www.utarget.co.uk to the list of blocked sites.

It is a particularly annoying pop- under in that it consumes HUGE amounts of computing power. And that it pops up way too often.
|
If you use Firefox, have a look in Tools - add ons - extensions..
Can`t say more than that I believe ;) (maybe even not that - anyone reading this? ;)
We have to remember that HJ site needs adverts for funding, and as such, it would seem wrong to actually spell out on the site how to block them.
|
In Internet Explorer,go to "Tools" then "Pop-up Blocker","Settings", and set to "All"or "High".
While a single copy was acceptable,a copy for every post you look at is stupid ,so I am now blocking it completely!
|
Nothing wrong in adverts for the site; but this 1 is now more of an annoyance than an advert!
If i cant block it I will stay away from the site for a while. And I know a few people will cheer because of that.
But, it may mean other (newbies) stay away too ? So an advert driving people away is good for the site?
|
|
I never see any adverts, on any site...
|
It is now blocked on my machine but still driving me nuts as it gets 'blocked' while I am typing and causes everything to go doolaly.

Something funny going on !!!!!
I wonder if someone is trying to be clever by overcoming pop-up blockers. I get a message in IE7 saying that a pop-up has been blocked though the next click I make, i.e. to read a thread, reply, move from Discussion to Technical etc causes the pop-up to open in a new tab just as if I had clicked "Temporarily allow pop-ups" in the IE tool bar.
Rather annoying !!!!!
|
I've been getting the ad popup 5 or 6 times in one go too!
|
|
Yes, something very odd is going on. Used to get one Dell advert per visit, I've got 10 up now after a couple of minutes! It appears every time I look at a new thread. Can't just be users computers - must be something changed on the way the site presents them. They certainly sneak past the pop-up blocker. It's driving me mad!

It has been reported - HJ will be speaking to the advertising agency as soon as they open in the morning.
