I've been a member (well, customer) of the RAC for years - never used their services.
This morning, two weeks and three days after buying an 02 plate 156 24 JTD, I'm on the phone to the RAC!
Looks like my alternator has had its day. Looking around on the web, a replacement is an eye watering £180ish.
So, that's that. My RAC virginity has been taken by an Italian!

You buy an Alfa and are then surprised that you need the services of the RAC? You can't beat blind optimism can you? I'm just surprised that it's taken this long to need rescuing! Lovely car though... Would have one myself like a shot if it weren't for the almost daily emptying of my wallet!
Hope you get it fixed ok, and more cheaply than you expect!
Cheers.

Get it rebuilt for about half the price .

Wow, I didnt see that coming. A 6 year old car needs a new alternator. Never heard of that before.

"Wow, I didnt see that coming. A 6 year old car needs a new alternator. Never heard of that before."
No need for the sarcastic response - you appear to have missed the point of my post.
Never called the RAC out before. Buy an Italian car. Call RAC out.
Is that simple enough for you?

Well, I have a 51 reg Volvo which had its original alternator die on its former keeper last year (with an RAC callout), so it's on a par. Nobody ever questions Volvo's reliability.
What's the mileage on the car?
|
95k. It's not that I don't expact consumables to, well, be consumed, it's just funny that 2 weeks of Alfa ownership brings the RAC to my door...!
|
Sorry the sarcastic response was to the first reply, not yours. As mentioned above, recondition it or try one of the many excellent independant suppliers, like EBspares or alfaworkshop. Try the www.alfaowner.com forum for more info.

PR - fail to see how my post deserves a sarcastic reply, especially when it is so obviously tongue-in-cheek and when I express good fortune to the OP.
Cheers.

Ok sorry to you too. Its just so typical on this site to get genuine replies like that
|
Fair enough - I know what you mean. Friends again? :-)
|
Of course. Now go get yourself an Alfa!

Might be worth getting the battery tested as well. I'm no expert but I seem to remember being told that a combination of a new alternator and a tired battery can be an unhappy marriage. Something to do with the alternator having to work too hard I want to think.
Like I say, I'm not sure on that one, best get some pro advice.

Turns out it was a dodgy battery terminal lead.... Cost - £4.
Result.

Trouble is Dieselboy, this is actually bad news for the rest of us. Despite our latent desires to buy Alfas we have managed to convince ourselves that it would be foolish to do so. Stories like this relight the flames of temptation.......
:-(
Glad for you though !!

I want a C6 now - even more foolish :-(

Oh I dunno PU. Reckon they'll be cheap enough soon...... ( Sadly maybe )
|
I agree with Humph, wait it out, they just don't sell so there will be price adjustments eventually, the 607's are bargain basement 16K stuff now, hang fire.

Just in case anyone wants a bit more temptation to buy an Alfa, here's a picture of mine....

Yum yum.

You're a very bad (diesel) boy !!

Following a recent thermostat change (it was running very cold), I'm going to do a tried and trusted ECU reset - instructions courtesy of ala156.net. Hopefully it'll run even better....
Bet you wish you'd bought that 2.5 V6 now....
