1997 3.3i engine cuts out for no reason - ghosthunter10
Hi all,is there anyone out there who can help,
well what it is i can be driving 5 miles or even 10 miles and then the engine cuts out for no reason and its becoming more often about 6 times the other day and yesterday was the last straw as it cut out on a very busy bridge and caused a lovely line of traffic behind and not one asked if i needed a hand, anyway from what i can tell it does it when the engine warms up to normal engine temp at random, and for some reason it starts up again from anythin from 15 mins to 1 hour, ive changed the 3 cut out relays with no joy, diagnostics dosent show anything so this is my last hope.
PLEASE HELP.

Hi
When you say diagnostics doesn't show anything are you saying there is not any fault codes even stored codes? You can turn the ignition on and off 3 time ending in the on position and any fault codes should display in the trip display. So next time it does it do this and see if anything shows up or even do it now to see if anything is stored. If you have changed the fuel pump relay and the ASD relay it sounds like it's heat related and the only thing comes to mind is the cam position sensor so I am looking for a fault code for that.

How do you get it restarted, ywo things come to mind here, fuel pump or pump relay and ignition switch. Aslo explain in deatil how it cuts out, chugs to a halt or instant cut out. What is the dash telling you. Regards Peter

Hi peter, theres no error codes or anything and it just cuts out instantly no warning or anything,i dont have to do anything to get it started i just wait between 15 mins to an hour keep trying it and eventually starts up.

When if starts does it run well straight away i.e. not running rich. This would indicate the fuelling system had shut down and could be a faulty crank/cam sensor. This also shuts the spark down. Regards Peter

Hi,yes it always starts as if nothing is wrong but lately it has felt as if its holding back a bit while driving.where abouts are the crank/cam sensors and have you any idea how much it would cost to get it sorted.Thankyou very much.

Hi
Have you done my 3 key trick yet? you will know if you have done it correct and there are no codes as it will say "done" in the display. Cam sensor that i was talking about is in the top of the engine by the front pullies. 1 x 10mm bolt holds it in, I only said cam sensor as this is the only sensor that i have had to change for a brake down fault on a 3.3 but it is a very reliable engine.

Hi merlintec,
i tried quite a few times i even tried starting it up 3 times then turning it to the on position but for some reason it dosent show anything at all,if diagnostic or the 3 key trick dosent show anything im starting to get a horrible feeling there could be more than one fault, what do you think.thanks alot

Hi
you don't need to start it just turn it to the run position and back 3 times it should work. If no codes and you have done the relays it's not a common fault so will need to find out if it's a fuel or spark related fault.

This is sounding more and more like a faulty cam sensor. Regards Peter

Ask dealer. Easy to change. Best check the connector for corrosion/water ingress first. Regards Peter

It?s 1x 10mm bolt so nothing to fit. New sensor comes with a bit of cardboard on the end this is to set the correct air gap as the bolt hole is elongated so don?t take it off when you fit it.

hi,i fit loads of crank sensors to the 3.3 voyagers, they work in tandem with the cam sensor to give a 5 volt feed to the injectors,i break these cars for a living,i have two workshops full of parts especially the dreaded BCM and MAY & SCOFIELD immobilser units.

Hi. I have a 2001 Chrysler Grand Voyager 3.3i. Presume the engine is similar if not the same as the earlier model. It just cut out while pulling away today and wont start. Pulled and grounded a spark plug and there is no spark on cranking. Any suggestions? Crank/cam sensor perhaps. If so, where are they on this model and are they easy to replace?

My OBDII scanner tells me no faults, although the MIL is on. Also the oil light is on - goes out when you crank. It was low on oil and have topped up.

Cheers,

Richard.

Hi
Have you done the key trick to check for codes like posted above?

Hi all,

I've tried turning the key to run and off three times as described above but nothing is shown on the trip display other than the miles.

I'm having exactly the same problem. Car starts and drives exactly as it should and then every now and then it'll cut out without warning. Put in park, press the unlock button on the fob and it'll start straight away without any problems.

It's becoming more often that this happens now so it's becoming a bit of a concern.]

Any ideas?

I suspect there is a major problem with this car. You are not on your own, there are lots of people with the same problem and its downright dangerous. I can cite many examples where this failure has led to near accidents. I am currently building a case to take on Chrysler on this issue as currently they deny its existance and cannot apparently replicate the issue nor provide a solution. They need to be held to account. Would you be so kind as to email me at andrew.nicholls@gmail.com as your testimony to this issue would help yours and others cause. Thank you
