I remember there being a lot of outrage about this and hints that the government would review the matter in the autumn, possbly reviewing the unfair retrospective measures but have heard nothing more on the subject. Does this mean that it is going ahead and that we in this country are just going to roll over and accept it like always. I think it could prove crippling for people with older, larger cars, particularly in the current economic climate.

This morally corrupt shower that pretend to be a Government have got to raise a serious amount if tax to pay for their years of mismanagement. I think it'll go ahead and get a whole lot worse.
But Gordy still says absolutely none of it is his fault...course not Gordon.

I read an article a few days ago (can't remember where) that a delegation from the SMMT met with the Treasury quite recently and were left in no doubt that Treasury coffers are empty and the motorist will bear the brunt of revenue raising measures.
The SMMT expect that the VED increases will go ahead.
There were also rumours that, now oil is below $70/bbl, Darling is thinking of going ahead with a 2p/litre increase in fuel duty.
Wasn't the PBR due this month? Are they too scared to publish it before Glenrothes?

They were in a hole before the banking bailout, and now they've smashed even their flexible rules on borrowing. The mess the public finances are in at the moment means that whoever is in power has some very serious fundraising to do over the next few years. As motorists, we will be the cash cows, under the pretence of "the environment" as ever.
It also wouldn't surprise me if this deferred 2p fuel duty increase gets the nod in the next few weeks, given that petrol has now dropped under £1 a litre.
|
They think we are used to fuel @ £1.20 a litre - wouldn't surprise me if they put 10p extra duty/tax/ripoff on it! Nothing is beyond these incompetent shysters.

I too expect it to go ahead. When they were finally (a few months too late) collared about it by the media and opposition parties there were mutterings about 'reviews' and 'changes likely to be made'. But nothing concrete. So I confidently expect that was just to shut everyone up and they'll stiff us as usual come March.
Another thing which adds to my suspicion is that I've been in correspondence with Angela Eagle (I can't even write that name any more without my lip curling) via my own MP, and the last letter has received no response despite my MP having re-forwarded it to her 3 times over the last 4 or 5 months.
What situation are we in when our politicians refuse to answer the questions posed of them?
|
>I've been in correspondence with Angela Eagle
Ding! That name rang a bell.
That's who the SMMT had their meeting with at the Treasury - they weren't impressed either.

Can I be a pedant and point out that this change is more accurately termed as retroactive, not retrospective.
|
>Can I be a pedant
Pedants weren't covered in our diversity training, but what the heck - go ahead, there's no discrimination here.

I don't think it is either actually. There has never been any suggestion that the chancellor will be retro-actively collecting additional tax for previous years already paid.
Like nearly all tax changes, it only applies to designated categories from the date of implementation.
But why spoil a good case with too much accuracy? "Retrospective" sounds nicely emotive.

Twin sisters, mid 40s, powerful... ...I wonder if they swing. Yummy.
They are identical twins, so who knows if anyone can tell them apart.

The new job for Maria Eagle is:

Maria Eagle to work on .... [ guess ? ]
Maria Eagle replaces Barbara Follett, who leaves the Government Equalities Office to become an arts minister.
She is the twin sister of Angela Eagle, a junior Treasury minister

It's funny you should ask, I think it has been quietly watered down.
They seem to have inserted some "registered after xxx 2006" dates on the VED GOV website which I'm sure were 2001 before, or maybe looking again they just made it more confusing.
