04 1.6 Coolant leaking and heater hot all the time - Saff
Hi all.
I could really use some help and/or advice from anyone who knows a bit about MG TF's. I have an 04 one in Metallic Grey. Best buy ever and I love it!! Know what you will all be thinking but she is my baby!!! I recently noticed that water was leaking from the coolant system and it was using about a tank of water per day. The fans in the car also seemed to be blowing in hot air even when they weren't on.......Took it the garage (worried to death it was going to be the usual HG probs). Thankfully they tested for that and all was ok. They have advised that I need a new thermostat although were unsure as to what would be causing the fans to blow hot air......

it isn't overheating and the temperature hasn't moved!!

Any idea, thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers, Saff

A little bit of clarity over the " fans in the car blowing hot all the time" would help. Do you mean the radiator fans running all the time ? or the heater fan?
I would have another garage check your water loss. Its vital that these do not lose any water!. the pipes under the car that have a shield over them do suffer from corroding through & HG's are a number 1!

Hi,

Sorry I should have been cleared. I mean the heater fans running all the time, even when they are not switched on. As far as I can tell the button is working and when they are on it will let you change from hot to cold and vice versa.
I'm at a bit of a loss with garages - there don't appear to be any specialists even close to where I live. I will keep hunting but if you do know of any on the Stoke on Trent / staffordshire area can you let me know?. Cheers.

Its reasonably common that the plastic dial for the heater knob breaks inside and when turned wont move the spindal to move to cold air etc. My TF trickles hot air into the cabin when the car is moving and the heater is pointing to hot even when the blowers are turned off - unless I turn the temperature down.

It may or may not be related to your coolant loss, however I wouldnt be driving the car until you have sourced the leak. You dont want to run it too low or cause air locks in the system as the next problem will be the headgasket.

I doubt that the thermostat is at fault from the symptons that you have described. Is the garage you are using trusted to you or an MG specialist? Check for leaks at the bleed screw on the rad, undercoolant pipes, water pump and dont forget to maybe change the coolant cap as if they dont hold their pressure the water will locally boil in the header tank and vent out the steam - water loss, without loosing water :-). For a 5er its worth changing.

The headgasket, as you may know, on the K series will blow as a sympton of something else causing hot spots to the head - whether it be total lack of coolant or air locks in the system. Dont run it until the cause is identified!

Hi,

The knob isn't broken and will still let you turn hot to cold and vice versa. Hot air is indeed coming through the fans when the car is running. I'm not currently running the car at the moment. I am though struggling to find an MG specialist in the Stoke on Trent / Staffordshire area......Anyone you could recommend would be greatly appreciated!!
Where would be the best place to source a new coolant cap from? Cheers.

For a new coolant cap - www.rimmerbros.co.uk or as below:

For TF in the know servicing try Friarsgate they have places in Lichfield and Tamworth.

pop onto mg-rover.org and ask in the f/tf section. Lots of owners from all over the country so its likely someone can suggest a good MG specialist.

The MGF centre (do a google search) is somewhere in your neck of the woods I think - although the Midlands is a big place and im not 100% where it is!
