hi

first I'd like to say hello to whole forum, got registered on yesterday but I'll be probably staying here for a longer time :P

I'll be passing an exam for driver license soon and the car I want to buy is a Mitsubishi Galant EA5A (1997-2003, 8th gen). The one I want to buy has a 2.0 turbodiesel engine. I want to know what are your opinions on this car (yes, I know the engine is sloppy and slow like a turtle, but I don't have any other options). There is a good reason for this extact one - price. The guy who will be selling it (for now he's looking for another Galant but a 2.4 litre petrol) is a friend of my father and the price is 10 000PLN (I live in Poland). I might negotiate it a little. Since the car is a 2000 year it's a price very low (market price is about 18000 PLN).

Getting to the point - I want to know how this car drives, handles and what things can break down. Thanks for all answers to this.

I've got no experience of the diesel but had 3 years service from a 2.5 litre V6 petrol. The autoboxes may need attention at 170,000km, listen for bearing noises from the manual boxes at about the same mileage too.

Otherwise they drive quite well, handling is fair for a big old car and it's quiet inside on the motorway. No rust issues but the front strut bushes can wear and need replacing.

A good car, but aren't you 15 years too young to buy one? It's great for carrying the family around but don't you want something different as a young driver?

this one has manual gearbox and about 205000km mileage by now.

Well tbh I was really into a Honda Civic VI gen. coupe (they call this EJ6?) with D16 or a Celica VI gen. with the 1.8 petrol, but the price on that Galant is like half of the market price (and lower than a Civic or Celica) so I thought it'd be a good deal to make - and that's the really main reason that I buy it. The other reasons are that I buy it from a person that I know and it has an auto A/C, 2 airbags, ABS, power steering, electric windows and mirrors, ASR also I think - and there aren't many cars for that price that have all those extras.

We'll see when this Galant will be for sale, I'm hoping it'll be soon.. if not, I'll be buying a Celica or Civic probably.

p.s. this one has minimal rust on the rear right archway, but it's not a problem actually.
p.s.2. any other things I should be aware of? I.e. turbo?
