Ended up at a Junction in Newcastle (Bottom of Gallowgate travelling from Haymarket) today with no where safely / legally to go.
It had a sign up with "no right turn except Buses, Taxi. CCTV in operation". I was in the right lane turning right with buses in the left hand lane. Left leads into a Bus area anyway. Straight ahead was closed off, and I couldnot turn around due to a central reservation.
I didnot notice any road closed signs, but was following a large van closely most of the way at 10 MPH so was close behind it so could have missed it..
I was one of many who ended up doing the same thing.....Whats the likely punishment for no right turn?

Exactly the same thing happened in Sheffield during some roadworks. Drivers had no option but to turn left due to a crazy road layout installation and inadequate signage. Unfortunately this meant going down a new bus gate with CCTV which was operational.
Thousands received tickets, but IIRC they were rescinded once the local paper became involved.
If you can get out there again and take some photos, including some of anyone else caught up in the same way. If you believe something isn't right and many are making the same mistake call the local paper.

bazza, I am sorry that i can't advise on likely outcome, but i offer you every sympathy - "20mph" sign opposite schools ( eg. ) is to hopefully prevent children's deaths, and quite right too, - "no right turn except for buses and taxis" is purely for minority convenience, ( as an ex-taxi driver, why should buses and taxis be allowed special priveleges on the road, above vans, or company cars, or dustbin vehicles, or ... add your own), and the fact that the thought that you may have inadvertantly, or unavoidably, transgressed is obviously causing you ( and others? ) stress and worry makes my blood boil, and for why ? In the scale of a lifetime, does it really matter that you turned right just there just then? I sincerely hope that you hear nothing about this. ( what about the van driver in front of you ? - imagine his scenario that morning, ..... " one more ticket Mansell, and you're sacked" )

I walked along the route today....
Every second lamp post has a sign saying Percy street Closed.(Problem is I have lived in Newcastle for 34 Years and until today I couldnot have told you that was Percy street without the help of a map. I even worked on a travel agent overlooking the junction in question for 4 years.) I knew the road further along was blocked and just thought that was that.
120 metres to the junction it says no access to Gallowgate and to turn around at the roundabout. But This could be hidden from view depending what size of vehicle was in the right hand lane.
If you miss this sign you are knackeed and are on the roundabout....
I sat and watched car after car doing the same as I had done..
Daft thing is I only dropped wor lass in the town...1st time I have allowed her out in 18 months and the road works have been on since July 2007!!
What fine or points am I likely to get from a CCTV camera?

Outside London they operate two bands:
Higher £70 or Band 2 £60.
From what you say signing is not 100% so get photos and lodge and argue in appeal if you get a PCN.
