I was speaking with someone I know vaguely at the weekend. He has an X reg Micra with over 120k on the clock. The local dealer does not want it as a P/X against an 05 Mini and suggested he sell it privately. Anyway he asked me what I thought it was worth and I suggested £1000. He was rather annoyed at this and suggested it was worth nearer £2500. Any ideas?

The milleage will put people off even on a Micra, and these engines are not as reliable as people make out, my grandads was pretty warn and rattly by 140k.
However I would inclinded to suggest £1000-£1500 depending on service history, spec etc if its been sold privately.

Parkers guide gives £1000-£1200 assuming it is a 1.0S in reasonable condition, but the mileage is high, so about £1k seems right.

Guessing at the spec, but Glass's guide (courtesy of Vauxhall) suggests
Nissan Micra S
1.4 Petrol 3-door Hatchback
5 Speed Manual Front Wheel Drive
Year: 2000 X
Mileage: 120,000
Part-exchange Price:
Excellent condition: £795
Average condition £705
Below average condition: £610
There's a whole raft of 100k+ mile Micras from between 1998-2002 on Autotrader for under £1,000.

Sounds like an engine that has not had the prerequisite 6-month/6000 mile oil changes to me. Most don't. If they do, they should not become rattly.

Yeah I didn't know the history of the car, my uncle bought it as a very high miler when it was quite young, it was then given to my grandad with something like 110k on the clock.

We recently sold our 2001 2-owner Micra with 40,000 miles on it and full service history for £2150 on Autotrader - the price we advertised it for. The lowest offer we had through Autotrader was £1200.
As a part-ex we were offered £1300 for it from a Mazda dealer, and £1200 from an Alfa dealer.
Most Micras are bought to do a few thousand miles a year by people who dislike driving and have no interest in cars. This sort of person would be concerned about the "high" mileage which would not bother your typical Mondeo buyer.
I was surprised we got so much for ours - there are several cars at the price we sold ours for that I would rather have bought. Even though I personally would not pay more than £600 for it, I reckon he could advertise it at £1450 and it would sell if it is in reasonably good condition.

Lol - what's he been smoking to think it's worth anything like £2K+?? I'm assuming he hasn't looked at Autotrader since he bought the Micra!

Looks like my estimate was in the right ball park as it is a base 1.0 model. I may hear some more come the weekend but I scanned our free paper and there was one a year older with 34k for £895.

Mine started having large repair bills once it got to 9 years old, including underbody welding, and numerous engine components failing. Plus Nissan servicing was not cheap. I read somewhere they are built to last about 7 years. I'm not sure of the accuracy of that though it would fit my experience.
