Speed limits for light commercials. - gordonbennet
I've just read HJ's road test of the Mazda pick up, something he mentioned about speed limits has confused me slightly.

Can anyone confirm what i believe please.

HJ mentions that a 2WD commercial pick up would be limited to 50mph on UK A roads, yes i'd agree with that.
But goes on to say that a 4 door 4 x 4 version of the beast would be classed as dual purpose and could travel at 60 mph.

I was under the impression that a commercial would be limited to commercial speeds.

Our beasty is a 4x4 hilux 4 door, could someone reconfirm to me the max speed allowable on NSL single and dual carriageway and motorway roads please, its regd and taxed as a LGV.

Isn't it also tied to whether you pay VAT or not-not paid on "commercials"?

AFAIK it's all to do with the definition of "car-derived vans" - but some Transit Connects are still NSL and some aren't - depending on gross weight. [<2040kg?]

A double-cab 4x4 is a DPV and thus car NSLs apply; this has always been the case with Land-Rovers too.

I'm sure it's all explained simply on the DVLA's site....

Been trying to make head and tail of the DVLA site Screwloose and not a hope, but i found what i hope is the correct answer here

Always thought our pick up would be 50/60/70 so thats a nice surprise.
Found an earlier Telegraph reply by HJ, and he states the same there.

Edit, as jc2 mentioned above i thought as the vehicle was VATable constituted van/lgv status too.

this is a nightmare isn't it ? pop in to your local police station and ask the man on the counter where you stand. then ask him if you can quote him if necessary! .. any comments BIB ? ( i have a renault master based vehicle, and i dont want to break the law, it's my livelihood, so what are my speed limits ) ? in practice i stick to the lowest limits i can find, but would like to "make more progress" if i can. At the moment my only penalty is time, but WHEN tachometers filter down to small vehicles, this is going to become a serious issue.

In the Master panel goods van range then goods vehicle speed limits apply and
not exceeding 7.5 tonnes max laden weight:

Motorway 70 (no trailer)

Dual carriageway: SIXTY mph

Single carriageway: FIFTY mph

In the other range is it a dual purpose vehicle ?

i.e. a vehicle :

constructed for both the carriage of goods and passengers and

goods UW n/e 2,040 kg and

has 4 wheel drive,

or has

rigid roof with or without sliding panel, and

area to rear of drivers seat must have have one transverse row proper upholdstered
seating from two persons, and

distance between steering wheel and backrest of rearmost seat not less tghan than one third distance between steering wheel and rearmost floor, and

Windows to rear of drivers seat must have an area not less than 1,850 sq cm on either side and not less that 770 sq com at the rear.

If it complies with Dual purpose rules then speed limit is sames as a normal car ie 70/70/60. If not goods vehicle limit applies.

?car-derived van? means a goods vehicle which is CONSTRUCTED OR ADAPTED AS A DERIVATIVE OF A PASSENGER VEHICLE and which has a maximum laden weight not exceeding 2 tonnes;

If a car derived van then same limits as a normal car.

Thankyou for the confirming answer DVD, it gets a bit confusing when the vehicle's taxed and regd as a LGV, but is in fact a dual purpose 4WD pick up, and you lost me somewhere about the 1,850 sq cm point..;)

I know my 7.5t lorry's limits are 50/60/70 on single/dual/motorways. I understood the limits for Transit/Sprinter size vans were also 50/60/70, and those for Connect/Escort van size were as per car limits, ie 60/70/70. I would have thought Hilux/L200 type pick ups (whether 2 or 4 door) would fall into the last category (ie car speed limits).

I know in the FAQ's on the back of speeding NIP's it is explained that the speed limits are lower for commercial vehicles but the last time I saw one of those was 4 years ago, so I can't recall how much detail it goes into.

Thanks DVD, my van fits into your first category, and my main doubt was the motorway limit, so i can move up a a bit from the 60 i was sticking to, which is good.

inside the police station, a view i happily confess that i have not had for many years, i did not realise that the counter person would be a civvy nowadays, so no, i probably wouldnt expect them to to know. thank goodness for the internet eh!
