think I got a problem with my carb looking for help, symptoms are try start it car just keeps turning over put foot on throttle(even slightly) and sounds like engine locks up wait and sometimes it starts or if you retard timing it will splutter till you reset dizzy, any help would be appreciated,
cheers Paul

First, check the cam timing. This should only take a few minutes, as, once the crank marks are aligned, it's only a case of releasing a few cam belt cover clips, and pulling the cover back a little to allow you to see the marks. You may need to rotate the crank a full turn to align the cam timing marks.
If that's OK, take the distributor cap off (5.5mm bolt heads), and check that the distributor shaft cannot rotate freely. The plastic drive pin between the end of the cam and the distributor was well known for shearing off. While you're there, check the rotor, carbon brush, and cap for any damage
How are you setting the ignition timing? IIRC there is quite a specific procedure on these engines, with a wiring loop to disconnect first, and it's very easy to get it badly wrong. I'll see if I can find anything in my notes (but, don't hold your breath!)
Leave the carb alone! (for now)

I think I would be looking at the ignition system rather than the carb.Remove the distributor and check the plastic drive peg that engages with a recess in the end of the camshaft. It was very common on these for the peg to break off.hth

have checked my cam timing both cam and crank line up,been playing with this for ages and beating me,has a new rotor arm and cap, thought it was fuel as i said turns over and over without firing till you touch throttle then locks up.

>>then locks up.
Suggesing that the timing is WAY out.
To repeat my question, how are you setting the timing.
Also, are you *absolutely* sure the distributor drive pin is OK.
Forget the carb for now.

cam timming mark at 12 o`clock, crank gear with bottom pulley of has a pointer at 6 o`clock, set distributer with rotor arm pointing at no1 on cap,pin looks ok looks like semi circle going to full, once running runs ok,puzzled............

There are 2 aspects to the timing, the cam timing, and the ignition timing.
To check the cam timing, your looking for the marks between the crankshaft pulley and block, and the camshaft pulley and timing belt cover being in alignment.
For the ignition timing, you need the engine at operating temperature, ticking over. Look near the bottom hose, and you'll find an electrical connector with two wires on one side, and a loop of wire on the other side of the connector. Temporarily unplug the connector, and remove the loop - this puts the ignition controller into setting mode. With a stroboscope set to 0 degrees, set the distributor timing so the marks on the crankshaft pulley align.
When you've done, plug the loop back into the connector.
Just pointing the rotor arm towards number 1 is nowhere near good enough.
