My tax disc renewal form hasn't got a space for putting the vehicle mileage this time When did this option disappear? It seemed like a good idea to me.

Cant remember when it disappeared.

But why not renew your tax online?

V5s had them I never saw them on reminders !

They're been on VED renewals for a long time!. I can't recall if it was present on the online renewal or not.
I guess now that they get them from the MOT that might be good enough for them. (ignoring the first three years).

The form I'm referring to is V11 "Renewal reminder for a tax disc". I've never received a reminder which wasn't also a renewal application form.

What was a V5?

I tax my car at a Post Office to help to keep it open.
I don't tax it online because of the risk of the tax disc being lost in the post.

I tax mine on line as they are not so incompetent as our village post office.
Last time I tried, I got all the way home (walking) to find they had issued a 6 months disc instead of a 12 month one (I know, I know, I should have checked when I got it - I won't have to anymore now though)

Agreed !

I used to tax my car at the local post office to help keep it open.

However, since it changed hands a couple of years ago, the staff are so rude and incompetent that I now tax online instead. I don't buy stamps or post parcels there anymore, either.

Wouldn't bother me if they were to be shut down. I'm sure one of the other local shops would be only too pleased to have the opportunity of taking over their franchise.

If post offices had never existed, would anyone now trouble to invent them?

Could it be that PO zapps the renewal direct to DVLA electronically so no need to send the renewal?

I doubt it, because the tax disc is written out by hand.

Not at the PO I used to use. They had a printer to fill in the details on it.

Not really - only a small town.

That's impossible to answer. Post Offices evolved, they weren't invented. The postal service started in the days before there were cars, computers, telephones, bank accounts, cheque books, credit cards, debit cards, courier services, metalled roads, public transport etc etc etc

Without a postal service civilisation as we know it probably wouldn't exist, so the question is academic.

Most of the manholes in our village say "Post Office" on them - It's a long time since I saw a postie pop down one!

I'm not saying we don't need a postal service, just that none of the things people now do at post offices actually requires a network of buidlings all over the country.
Stamps - purchase anywhere, or online
car tax - online, post, or LVLO
pensions - direct credit
cash - any bank, Spar, shops, etc
Passports - post
Parcels - weigh and stamp at home, take to depot or hand to postman.

Look at the "community" you see wearily waiting in a PO queue, and you see a lot of frustrated people who could be taking their business elsewhere.

Many elderly people (1) don't have a bank account for their pension to be paid into, and have to collect their pension in cash from the Post Office, and (2) couldn't get to a depot to post parcels. They rely on their local Post Office.

Plenty of other institutions dispense cash - eg banks. The rival couriers come and pick up your stuff - why not the post van?

None of these reasons justify an expense network of thousands of dedicated buildings all over the country. All remaining PO building functions could be easily subcontracted.
PO retail buildings are completely anachronistic. I'd close the lot, not just a few rural ones.

Motoring relevance - why is the PO so reluctant to capitalise on its postal and van services and diversify into other products requiring door to door transport? Why have they handed the business to the white van men? Why not post buses?

I repeat .......... many elderly people don't have a bank account for their pension to be paid into. And I know of village residents who don't have a car to get them to the nearest town that has a bank. They are dependent on their local Post Office.

If those elderly people don't have cars, do they not have free bus passes?

Why do you want to make life more difficult for the elderly? Maybe they are also infirm and can do without being bounced up and down in a bus for what maybe a considerable time in both directions, or stand in the rain and cold waiting for one?

If you're lucky you'll be old one day, I for one hope the younger will be sympathetic to my needs if I'm lucky enough to get old.

And then there are the ones who complain that they never get to go out. No pleasing some people - and it's usually the pensioner who does nothing but complain ;o)

Note the smiley, some don't

G/f's Mother waited fifteen minutes in P.O queue to renew her road tax and pay her "United Utilities" water bill, only to be told that there would be a charge if she paid at the post office, but it would be free if she used a "PayZone" outlet (i.e the P.O shop counter!) so she opted to pay it there to avoid the charge, waited another 10 mins till the Clerk had finished the P.O queue, who then came through into the "shop area" and served her!
Mad! no wonder they are being phased out.

That's just because of the staff at one particular Post Office. It doesn't mean that all Post Offices are the same.

I went in for a renewal form the other day - to my local village post office - and was told that they don't use them anymore. They do it online with dvla.

In the end I did mine online - mainly because I couldnt find my actual certificate of insurance. I've got 3 copies of the schedule though. At least I know that big brother knows I'm insured.
