Can someone explain what the term diesel "nailing" means?

In the context of diesel engine sound.....looked at some vildeo on you tube and the guy was talking about the Injectors "diesel nailing"......maybe it's an american term.

I think it is to do with the sound a diesel engine makes - just like a nail being hammered in - such unrefined beasts - stay well away !

There's a term "hosing" which is where an injector puts out the fuel as a jet rather than a fine spray.

Try Googling "diesel nailing" - there are several hits; this site being first :) but then the next one is the Beru (they make injectors) site.

I think it's just another term for knocking.

It's a term used for poor, knocking combustion in a diesel. It can be caused by incorrect injector timing, poor compressions, and damaged injectors, among other things.
