tell what diff is in it?
Let me explain.
I used to race a classic Mini in autograss a few years ago,and as the old grey matter isn't what it was,you could tell what diff was in it,by taking the wheel circumferance, and measuring it against,I think, the bottom pulley v the number of revolutions they used to do.
Am I correct in my theory?

Yes, that will give you the overall gear ratio.
It will depend upon the ratio of the actual gear you are in at the time, and, the detail I can't remember off the top of my head which is whether you can ignore the transfer gears or not (i.e., is there any ratio between crank turns and gearbox input shaft turns)

Yep, in 4th gear the overall ratio was the same as the diff ratio. The transfer gear was 1:1 as was 4th gear.
