04 tdci 130 Noisy diesel or just normal? - robbo72
Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can advise on the following:-

I have driven several diesels in the past (Toyota, Peugot, Vauxhall) which all differed slightly in age and refinement, noise etc etc. I have recently bought a 2004 Mondeo TDCI 130 with 58,000 miles on the clock, which seems to run very nicely with plenty of power and very quiet considering it's a diesel, however as it's the first ford diesel i've owned i'm unsure if the noises i hear on this car are a problem are as they should be!!

When at low revs (idle) and slowly pulling away or manouvering, the engine sounds very clattery for a few seconds - is this normal? as the accelerator is depressed and the revs increase, the noise disappears. Whilst I expect to hear the solid "knock knock" sound of a diesel, this noise sounds like more of a clattery pinking sound to me (not a tappety noise) A couple of people have commented on how noisy it is when i've been parking up close by and it's started me thinking!! - most other diesels i've heard seem to have a fairly "solid" diesel noise when manouvering or accelerating away from standstill.

Can anyone reassure me that this is how a TDCI should be or do i need to check it out?

Thanks.

Did you buy this from a garage...???

It sounds horribly like the dual mass flywheel has gone west - which will be the wrong side of £1000 to put right, which is quite probably why it was sold on. If it was garage purchase then they should put it right, if not, then brace your credit card :-((

hi Richard,

i bought from a dealer - it doesn't sound like a mechanical knocking, when i say clattery i mean a diesel fuel type clatter, not a mechanical clatter (if that helps!!) it sounds more like fuel being put into the engine and pinking under load. It disappears almost instantly when i press throttle progressively, but it seems quite noisy say when creeping along in traffic at very low revs - i noticed that when the car is started from cold and backing off driveway, that the noise does'nt always seem to be there ( i wondered if it was something to do with the timing being retarded?)

These engines also suffer from the auxilliary drivebelt pulley breaking up.
Look at the drivebelt & tensioner while the engine is ticking over & see if it is thrashing about rather than running smoothly. Think the part is about £70.

Thanks dieselnut, is it worth changing the tensioner with the belt as i've heard these can fail? - i'm not sure it's been changed on a recall or anything.

When I did my sons Mondeo I just changed the lower pulley, as the tensioner seemed ok.
Just check that there is no wear.
Others with more experience may say different.

I this problem recently on a 54 plate 115 TDCi, the car went to a diesel specialist who interogated the engine with the proper equipment, found no fault codes but as a precaution recoded the injectors. So far the car is quieter, runs smoother and does not emit so much smoke on acceleration. Cost me £90.00.

It's probably had the latest ECU software update, mine has a "pinking" type sound under load when cold which started after having the update. Apparently it's normal. I just keep the load on the engine light until it warms up (as you should do anyway), the noise is not present when warm.
A shot of Millers additive and good quality fuel makes the TDCi engine quieter.

It is said that disconnecting the battery for 30mins or more clears the ECU memory so when the ECU "re-learns" the driver's driving characteristics.

I disconnected the battery on mine once when replacing a dash bulb, afterwards it was initially a little less refined though after a few miles settled down very nicely so could be worth a try re the reported issues.

If you do disconnect the battery make sure you have the radio code and the hand book because the elec windows (and elec roof if fitted) auto cut off may have to be reset - easy to do though.

Thanks everyone - with regards re-mapping i have spoken to a specialist who quoted £45 for interogating the car, and if remapping is required £200 (which sounds expensive to me!!)

I have after reading other forums, disconnected the battery and this morning all pinking seems to have gone and the car engine has more of a solid diesel tone without the pinking noise which i had as the clutch started to take up - i appreciate that being on it's learning curve it may return later on. (how do you reset windows? i noticed that the one touch window up doe'snt seem to be working which i'm sure it did before!!)

Just another question - i've seen adverts for plug in mapping units which increase BHP etc - does anyone have experience of these, and do these overrule the manufacturer's standard mapping? do these damage the engine?

Thanks,

Robbo.

IIRC disconnecting the battery removes the pilot injection function for a few miles then it does return. The pilot injection makes the engine run smoother (although not necessarily quieter) so your pinking may well return. Regarding resetting the electric window one touch memory function, just open the window then press and hold the up button until it is fully closed then release and press the up button again and hold for a couple of seconds. Repeat this for each window.

Robbo, you are far from alone. My 55-plate example (130 bhp, Euro 4) used to do exactly this (and probably still does - I sold it in March). A mate's 05-plate Euro 3 130 didn't.

I have heard many Euro 4 models making a similar noise and I had assumed it was something to do with how the injection was set up with these.

Thanks Paul - its reassuring to know that it seems to be common with the Euro 4-i was starting to worry it was a sign of faulty injector or something worse!!. I'm very impressed with the car as otherwise it actually runs and drives extremely smoothly with plenty of power so i'm assuming it is after all ok. ( i heard an '05 plate one last week which also sounded very similar)- Thanks all for your help.

Hi.
I too have this problem. I have a friend who has the same car and he says it is fine, they all sound like it.I am going round to his house soon to have a listen. My car is 2005 and has done 77000.It goes really well but its just that ticking when you pull away. It seems to be worse this week after I filkleditup.Im going to try the high octaine diesel to seeif the oposite happens. I had an Astra for 5 years and it didnt sound so bad but didnt go nearly so well. I am a bit paranoid as the head gasget in the astra went twice in 2 weeks so I am always listening for problems

I know this is quite an old thread, but mine mondeo does exactly the same as descibed at the top, it clatters as you set off, apart from that runs great. Took it upto ford dealer for diagnostic check and they said it needed the injectors re-coding, which made it run smoother but it still has the same problem. Any ideas anyone ??

my 02 mondeo tdci 130 idles noisily, and a bit noisier under load, almost like a vibration somewhere, i have changed all the injectors as it was running on 3, the noise is still there, but it pulls well, only done 75k, i have heard other mondeo tdcis on idle and they sound exactly the same, so im beginning to think there isnt a problem, hope this heps

My 2005 TDCi has always been a little noisy, although no worse than others of the same type. However, two or three weeks ago it seemed to get a little more noisy than normal. It still goes well though, and I first thought that the noise may have been due to poor quality diesel. Fill ups at different sources have proved this was not the case though, and this has led me to think about any other changes. The only point that I can think of is that I had the brake pads and discs replaced a few days before I noticed the change in noise. Could this be due to the battery having been disconnected? The garage may have done it as a matter of course due to the brake wear sensors being disconnected in the change. I have done about 700 miles since the work was done, so reading the above comments, I would have thought that any re-learning would have sorted itself out by now, but the noise persists.

Any ideas?
