Is the Back Room over-moderated? [Read Only] - ifithelps
I only ask because some fairly innocuous stuff seems to have been 'taken down' recently.

Obviously, a free-for-all is not an option and I think we can all see the sense in 'no naming, no shaming'.

So I'm talking about the margins, that difficult grey area of what is acceptable and what's not.

The other point is should we as users have any say in the matter?

If we do, I'm content to abide by the consensus.

If we do not, then at least we know where we stand.

I hope this post doesn't get taken down, but of it does, I'll have my answer, won't I?

Is this by any chance an attempt at poetry.
Its just that every line starts with a capital letter and the spacing......
I prefer poems that rhyme though.;-)
Is the Back Room over-moderated? - ifithelps
Poetry, sir? No, prose is all I aspire to.

The capital letter denotes the start of a new sentence.

The spacing is meant to make the post easier to read, at the expense of a little screen real estate.

Glad to see someone taking the content so seriously. :)

I think it is very well moderated by sensible unpaid volunteers. I think the bottom line is that this is a good and useful site, it is free, it belongs to HJ and the DT and if we don't like it we don't have to come here.

I have had some mild verbal abuse from some Newbie who thought he was on www.chavs in saxos.com, I reported it and it was removed. I am guilty of thread drift from time to time and I think I annoy the Mods a bit but I like it here!

PS. Where is Moderator PoloGirl?
Is the Back Room over-moderated? - Westpig
I don't think so.

There are bits that I personally would allow a bit more leeway e.g. slightly colourful language, but more than accept that this view isn't for all... conversely i detest political spats, because I too have firm views and could blah for England on the subject...but don't out of courtesy to others, so prefer a level playing field.

I think the Mods do a cracking job, when you think it's voluntary and appreciate the general civility on here, it's why i stick around.

Agree with Westpig and AS. I assume the motorway police thread went 'cos (a) it was turning into just another round of bash the cops and (b) in circs of mlc's employment it was too near home (and that's not a criticism of his responses!!)

I think the mods do a pretty good job, is the BR over-moderated?, I dont think so, maybe I missed the posts that were subsequently taken down so can't judge them in particular but I havent had any problems, yet.

The difficult grey arrears will always be that, difficult and grey, better to delete them than get a load of legal carp for not, dont you think?

Maybe a mod could give us a scenario or two that would be zapped and then we could decide whether they are going all Blairy on us.

Or is it me?

It's very frustrating to reply to a thread only to find the whole thread deleted!

I am glad the Motorway Cops thread went AWOL because I was pretty wound up and about to post something I'd probably regret later. I wonder if another thread would be allowed about the program, now that everyone has hopefully calmed down.

The rules are fairly clear.
One of which is no public discussion of moderation (I think).
Compared to most other motoring (and other) forums this is a haven of peace and tranquillity and long may it be so.
Thumbs up to the mods.
Is the Back Room over-moderated? - Mapmaker
This probably will be removed as it is in breach of forum rules.

Where you feel you disagree with a particular action or the style of moderation please feel free to e-mail the moderators at moderators@honestjohn.co.uk or Honest John at letters@honestjohn.co.uk. Discussion of moderating policy or actions is inappropriate within the backroom itself and therefore will be removed.

I think the moderators are fantastic. We are guests here of HJ, he sets the rules, we obey them or go elsewhere. When people storm off a forum because they don't agree with policies, they're seldom missed, and rapidly forgotten about.
Is the Back Room over-moderated? - L'escargot
It would be impossible for the rules of moderation to be hard and fast. I think the current moderators do a good job. Regarding having a say in the matter, you are at liberty to put your opinions to the moderators via email as to what is acceptable and what isn't acceptable.

I specifically requested the Motorway thread was deleted. A thread I started to give the heads up about the programme produced some and I will use the word advisedly, misguided comments. It also caused me to post in a manner that is not my usual style.

Pug and the rest do a fine job. The fact you're all still here would suggest they have it correct.
Is the Back Room over-moderated? - SuperBuyer
Its not the back room thats over-moderated, its the entire world....

Even if I sometimes get a tad annoyed at some of the moderation on here, I don't often stay away for long (Mods - that should be read as a compliment, not as an insult...)

I for one wouldn't want to be sued for something I said on here.

Like I say, its the world thats gone mad, not the Back room

I agree. The same person who did it to you, did the same to me when I posted in CRQs what I though was a helpful reply. This unhelpful person then posted a totally unhelpful comment which added nothing to the original question, but had the sole purpose of rubbishing the information I had posted.

This a Telegraph supported forum, and it attracts mainly that type of audience which suits me fine. I think the moderation is excellent and the Police do an excellent job too.

8< snip! you should know why!

I do not think it is over moderated and the mods do an excellent job. In their own time for free remember.

When I've seen something I think is wrong in a thread (or it's going nowhere) I've emailed the mods and sometimes they have agreed and taken action. We can all give input to how things are moderated.

Sometimes instead of posting to argue against something we believe should not have been posted, it might be better emailing a mod. Then the post can be edited/deleted if needed and you do not further increase tensions.

I'm all for debate ut sometimes comments can get too personal.

I also think the police like MLC do a brilliant and difficult job. I have one real example where the motorway police from the M6 (so might be MLC patch) helped bring a driver back from the M6 toll all the way to junction 19 of the M6. Said driver had been drinking and may have failed a breath test but there were other circumstances. These were handled by those police and no charges or anything made. Police are human.

EDIT: oh dear I've stolen the thread. Delete the last bit if you want mods ;-)

Is it over-moderated ?
Well I don't hear anybody saying 'there's another motoring forum over here and it's better because it's not moderated'. In fact, I don't hear anybody saying 'there's another motoring forum over here and it's better...', so I think that answers that question

I have two rules that I TRY to stick by when posting -

If the question doesn't address the issue, don't ask it.
If you can't say anything positive, shut up.

feel free to adopt them ;-)

Just think, if the FIA ran the board, we would all have to own Ferraris and pledge our undying commitment to all things red and tasteless. You could even receive penalties if you dared post while not owning the said red car :-)
Therefore, could be worse.

General consensus suggests it's not. And excuse me for being biased, but I tend to agree ;o)

And now back to motoring please. DD. Case dismissed and thread locked.

Just to add my twopenneth. I removed the Motorway Police thread as the OP* had requested its removal - which is a fair enough reason in my book.

* As MLC said further up the thread !
