A traffic census in east Hull caused gridlock today.

Two Highways Agency checkpoints were set up in Hedon Road and Holderness High Road causing delays of more than an hour for motorists coming into the city centre.

Humberside Police took the decision to cancel the census mid-morning after the congestion became too heavy.

They did this on the M56 a few years ago just as it approaches Manchester airport - people were delayed by several (not one) hours, many missed flights. Then they abandoned it.

Apparently local radio had been told not to warn anybody about it as it would skew the result!

Droe through one on the outskirts of Chester recently and they were just handing people postcards - that worked quite well as the traffic is slow anyway, but of course few would return their cards.

There was an unusually high presence of police marked vehicles moving around the East area of Hull yesterday evening with lots of blues and two's activity too.

Coincidence or just a show of force?

Pity they didn't do the same on the A338 in Dorset. There was eight miles of tailbacks on the north bound carriageway out of Bournemouth during the morning rush hour last week
