But do they? and what else is going on?

Not back and forth, side to side?
Though perhaps they stay quite still, it is the rest of the world that goes side to side?

It's a simple 4-bar linkage.
Take 4 variable-length bars pinned at either end to each other to form a quadrilateral. Fix one of the bars in space (... or to the chassis) and fix a motor at one end of the fixed bar to rotate the other bar attached at that pin. Do some jiggery-pokery with the lengths and hey presto you've got a windscreen wiper linkage. Add some more bars to translate the motion to two wipers.
Try it with a board some straws and some drawing pins/paper fasteners.

I was wondering about the curvature of space time around the blades, the relative motion of the wiper outer tips and human perception from the spatial reference point of the drivers seat.
Is this why the rubbers keep hardening?

Back when I reverse, forth when I go forward.

But from the perspective of the red ant, sitting on the blades tip...

Oh dear oilrag. I think you're sitting too close to Cerne ;>)

Tom, You just found my inspiration for the thread ;)

I mean to say.. Whatever is going on with the wiper blades, no one can write the end of the book. if `end` has any meaning at all that is.
|
|
Oilrag, rather like a piston at the top and bottom of its stroke do they actually stop at the limits of their travel?
|
Sorry i dont mean to "Hijack" this thread - but on the subject
Does anyone find it really annoying when in a car that has wipers that sweep from Right to Left (as standard on Left hand drive cars), instead of of Left to Right (for right hand drive cars)
My Sisters Clio does this and if this is for keeping costs down so there is no conversion for right hand drive models, then the extra work in getting the wiper arm up higher on the right hand side must surley just be as costly
|
|
What Clio, ours is fine in that regard, the drivers side is well covered.
|
Not sure specifically i think its a 54 plate. not the current version anyway, i just dont like wipers sweeping right to left, as apposed to left to right - i just find it really annoying or am i being really petty?
|
Cheddar, They might be doing flattened figure of eight`s at the end of travel as the rubbers flop over ;)
Had a one wiper Uno once. Admired it for simplicity - no linkage- but it seemed a bit desperate with the speed it had to move.
|
You have to bear in mind that anything moving becomes shorter in the direction of movement, and that this effect increases with the speed of motion until the speed of light is reached when the object becomes 'infinitely vast'.
I wonder if Einstein had special fat wiper blades fitted to his car to overcome the first of these effects? Of course he wasn't really the enthusiast type. But better safe than sorry, ja?

So the red ant on the tip of the blade is ageing more slowly that its mates down on the ground? If so, non Newtonion time must be having a greater effect on the rubber towards the end of the blades?
|
|
It must oilrag, although the difference would be hard to measure with any degree of precision using normal instruments (thumb-joint, bit of string, narrowed eyes, etc.).

So the red ant on the tip of the blade is ageing more slowly that its mates down on the ground? >>
But surely has a shorter life expectancy?

Why am I reading this?
If I do so while sitting still, can I feel my life ebbing away?
|
But surely has a shorter life expectancy?
Yes, but like an invertebrate Lancelot it will have had a short but courageous life.
