If I had a car like that I would certainly never place it in a position to test its ability to stay on the road - even on a track day!

How much does it cost to insure a vehicle like this a year?

I know if you can afford to buy one you don't think about thinks like that but to the normal run of the mill person - surely the insurance per year must be like us paying our mortgage each month?

I would hate to guess what the excess on the policy would be!

Many drivers are too rough with the controls to drive that sort of car for long. Going to take a lot of concentration till you get used to it. Even thinking of testing its cornering or acceleration limits in the early days would be very misguided. Despite my age, cunning and mechanical sympathy, I can't help wondering if my palsied old right foot might not send me inadvertently right up the scenery on a bad day.

Not a very bad crash judging by the pix. Strong motor though. Looks ready for the next leg of the Carrera Panamericana...

I saw one of these being driven, very gingerly, on to Shuttle in Calais. Being on a bike I didn't do any direct viewing you understand.

Not tempted to do a wheelie over the top of it PU? I'm surprised at you.

No - on a bike you don't actually acknowledge kit like, only covertly.

There's one in Formby, probably owned by one of the area's footballers.

It's a property developer called Ray Smith. He's building one of the Liverpool towers I think.

Man with more money than driving ability buys silly car and crashes it.

Sorry, it's been a long week.

i'm not surprised to be honest

the veyron has more power than you could possibly imagine. Imagine how much power it has then trebble it. The thing will grip the road but press the peddle too much on a corner on the exit and the back will spin you out so quick your eyes wouldn't focus.

Other than that, he could have been going so quick he couldn't slow down or judge the corner in time but the thing has insane brakes so he must have been going v.v.quick.

I'm not saying exactly where in Formby for obvious reasons, but I have seen it going through Ince Blundell woods early teatime....:-)

My wife teaches the son of the person mentioned, at a school in Formby - lovely family by all accounts. He picks his son up occasionally in the Veyron, although the 'normal runarounds' appear to be a plethora of Ferraris, Lambos and the odd Range Rover Sport (of which there must be '000s in Formby).

He lives on Millionaire's Row in Formby, near the National Trust reserve.

So, given the way the property market's going, there might be a secondhand Veyron going cheap on Ebay before long, then LOL!

I thought the Veyron had all sorts of gizmos and tricks that were meant to stop people from losing control of it.

If I spent £840,000 on a car that looks like a mutant Smart on steroids, I'd splash out another 50K on a nice transporter so if I wanted to take the Veyron out for a spin I could just load it on the transporter and drive that instead!

The laws of gravity might be incontravertible but the effects of gravity aren't. Chapparal made the 2J suction car over 30 years ago that was assisted by a hovercraft-in-reverse effect. The Can-Am racer worked so well it was banned!
I suppose if they put suction equipment on the Veyron it would get wrecked by mud, dust and stone chips before long!

I wonder if the mystery driver is a motoring journalist. I have no evidence that this is the case, but I would guess that a significant proportion of Veyron road-miles are put in by people connected with the motor industry, motor sport, motor trade or motoring press.

My father worked in the motor industry years ago and someone offered him a drive in a 7-litre AC Cobra in central London. I think he said he drove it a couple of blocks and decided it was time to call it a day - despite being perfectly au-fait with high-performace cars and driving!
