Electric tyre inflator - unlucky? - Mike H
My second Ring RAC600 tyre inflator (see tinyurl.com/5euotr), which was an Autoexpress best on test, has just failed after 15 months. The first lasted only 5 weeks. It was a great piece of kit, but I don't really want to buy another given it's poor reliability record. Have I just been unlucky? Can anyone recommend an alternative at a sensible price? TIA.

I have had a 12V electric foot pump for years now manufactured by the International Tool Co. Obviously the model will have changed by now but you might care to take a look at their site: www.international-tool.co.uk.

The Autoexpress magazine online site also reviews all such items.

Indeed - and it's where the URL in my original post points.....

I'll look at International Tools and see what they have. Thx.

And add it to mine. How long does it take to top up a tyre with a footpump? And it's great exercise, particularly if you change feet for each tyre.

I had a Halfords electric one and it took forever. Got a double barrell pump and it's so much quicker (and quieter) to inflate tyres.

Quite agree about the exercise smugness which follows the use of a manual footpump. Very satisfying. I do find it best to avoid spicy food prior to such exertion though......

Dunno what make mine is, but I've had it for years - (and still have the box it came in as well). It was when Esso used to give out Tiger tokens, and it *cost* me something like 200 or so tokens. Similar model in Argos at the time was something like £20.

This isn't cheap, but its very quiet and very fast, comes with a good quality bag that also holds the ample air line.
It connects by croc clip direct to battery.

Still have the hand pump that came with a Lada - crudely made but suprisingly efficient - much quicker than a footpump and even more excercise!

"much quicker than a footpump"

I nearly bought a bicycle 'track pump' from Lidl on that basis recently, as I think the length is the important thing (or more exactly, the swept volume). I do have an electric one in one of those emergency start boxes, which usefully makes it self-powered, but it's noisy and slow, and the idiotic 0-300 psi gauge annoys me, when I only use the first tenth of the scale!

I have a Halfords Rapid Digital Tyre Inflator and I'm pleased with it. I originally bought it when ready for when I knew I was going to have to increase the rear tyres from their normal 32 psi to the recommended 46 psi for 5 occupants. It also comes in handy to increase the pressure in the spare (without removing it from the boot) to my preferred 50 psi after a service technician has dutifully reduced it to 32 psi.

(I inflate the spare to 50 psi because I know that by the time it needs to be used the pressure will inevitably have fallen, and it's easier to just let out the excess than pump the tyre up by the side of the road.)

I don't know how durable the inflator will be, but on the few occasions when it's been needed for large increases in pressure it's been a blessing.

The one that comes with Hondas is real work of engineering must have cost way more than the spare tyre it replaced mine is sat in the shed having being replaced with a proper alloy spare.

Look on e-bay and try and find one supplied with a new car which only uses goo and inflator. The one on my A2 was an excellent piece of kit - inflating the tyre on a colleagues car from flat to useable in less than a minute. I'm annoyed I didn't remove it when I traded the car!

The £3 cheapie which I bought when we had our first smart in 2001 still does the trick - not as quick as the A2 one, but more than adequate. I use it for airbeds when camping and it takes about 10 minutes to inflate one of those.

Please advise which Honda model comes with an electric pump to compliment the "Get You Home" spare?

I have a Honda CRV MkIII (April 2007) which is similarly blessed with this type of tyre and I can't say I have come across an electric foot pump to compliment it. Have I missed something?
