Why in all that is holy does anyone buy them? I keeping seeing them everywhere and I cant really believe it as they seem to have no redeeming features whatsoever.
Is it just me?

who knows? I was sat, parked recently waiting for the wife when a Dodge Caliber parked in front of me. I spent 10 minutes staring at a HUGE and very ugly plastic moulding that constitutes it's front end. I suppose if you buy one you're inside looking out!
See jase's thread. It's "We don't like Dodge" night!

I guess they're different cars and not that many on the roads; and who knows maybe the owners want to drive something different :)
I have to say though, if I did fewer miles, I'd like to get the sebring auto which I think is a 2.4litre and ignore the depreciation or fuel costs. I think the diesels are VW sourced though, so it makes sense to buy what is basically a VW for not much money.

Second-hand these may be interesting as alternatives to the standard cheap car -- i.e. Korean, Citroen, Fiat or Mitsubishi.
Anyone have any reliable data on reliability?

VERY cheap second hand.
Not that expensive new after all the discounts but brutal deprecation (see above).

Thats what sort of puzzled me about the whole thing - Hyundai, Kia and Proton sell reasonable ( some very reasonable ) cars at reasonable prices with reassuring warranties.
Ford and Vauxhall give you more choice and a better general drive than the above, but without the back up of a big warranty.
So then Im looking at these two cars and thinking, it has certainly no more ability than a Hyundai Sonata, but it has just a 3 year warranty so i wouldnt buy it for that either.
As such it would have to be even cheaper at 3 years old than the far eastern offerings because they have warranty to run which makes them accpetable as used purchases.
Couldn indeed be a bargin when warranty expires. The Dodge seems to be the cheapest of the two, year old examples down to under nine grand already with demo mileages. At 3 years old it will have tanked clearly.

Absolutely -- and with that VW diesel (probably the only modern diesel I'd fully trust) they could be a fantastic "run-into-ground" workhorse for the like of me who often works as a network deployment engineer and makes a bit of cash out of all those work miles.
Hmmm. Hmmm indeed. Must look into these!

Dodge Caliber SXT CVT I am running my second Caliber as an experienced motorist (42 cars) the Caliber is the absolute best value 2 litre auto hatchback on the rip -off UK market especially if you buy at the low internet price of around £10K. It is obviously not perfect but is better specified than any other car for the price.
