Just received warning that car needs taxing soon. It's a Y reg 2.0 Focus estate throwing out 205g/km CO2, so it's £115.50 for 6 months or £210 for 12 months.

If we pay £115.50 now, will it still be £115.50 for the next 6 months in 6 months time, or is it due to go up?

err its a no brainer, even if prices were to stay the same it'll save you £10 by taking 12 months.

It isn't if you don't have the full amount readily available.

Does the tax run out end Sept?

In that case, renew for 6mths, so will expire end Mar 09. You can then renew for 12mths for £210.

From 1st April 2009, the tax on a 205g car will be £300/yr.

Thanks for the info. As people have pointed out previously, I suppose it's not too bad when spread over the year, all things considered...

Wait a sec...

If his current tax runs out at the end of september, and he buys 6 months now, then as you say it will run out at the end of March. His next tax disc will therefore begin in April, and he will be charged the new rate, not the old one.
To avoid the proposed new rates for as long as possible, he should buy 12 months now.

Yes, I believe you're correct. I was thinking he'll be buying it it March, but of course, presumeably, it'll be at the new April rate.

I just did this on my own car, but tax ran out end of Aug, so next one will be from 1st March. It's therefore now too late for anyonme else to do the same.

Regarding cashing in the exisiting disk and buying a new one - I too have seen comments that DVLA will make this harder in the new year.

If the Focus is pre March 2001 then it is on the old system £185, though Y reg is March 2001 on IIRC.

What really annoys me though is what the government are doing with this massive extra revenue - nothing to help the motorist that is certain.

Simply using the environment as an excuse for a tax hike.

And it is not even well targetted, a 5000 mile p/a 5ltr V8 is less polution than a 30,000 mile p/a 1.0ltr super mini.

I've assumed the tax people have got it right, but I'll double check.

Car doesn't do many miles, but having something larger than SWMBO's Colt is useful (I won't say essential) for transporting the dog around and 540 mile round trips to parents in the Lake District. I suppose if we were buying now, I wouldn't go for anything smaller, but might look harder at a 1.6/1.8.

I assumed the same in my answer.

Is there anything to stop the OP from buying the tax disc earlier - i.e. to start at the beginning of March (even though it doesn't run out till end of March). I guess he'd forego one twelth of the cost at the lower rate. but that would still save in the region of £80 ??

just a thought.

Interesting question, and I don't know the answer.

I have heard that 'they' have closed loopholes people could have used regarding declaring SORN for a day just before March. It seems unlikely that they would have closed that loophole and then would allow people to just buy early anyway.

Thinking about it. I'm sure the last time I bought a tax disc at the post office I just showed up with the insurance, MOT and V5 and paid the cash.

So yes, the best course of action would be for OP to get 6 months now and then 12 months in the last week of Feb to start in March.
