Congestion charges, cameras everywhere, records held on computers internationally, etc etc. what is next? I hear Gps systems to track us and charge for mileage done are muted. I know some transport firms track their vehicles to keep an eye on the driver by Gps. Not a huge step to tracking the rest of us! What do you think could be brought in? Technology semes a mixed blessing, we have the best cars ever but are also under more technolgy driven restrictions.

Funnily enough, I was thinking of starting a fred along these lines barneyton ...
Where (I was thinking) could one live in the world, and not be severely taxed until death (including death) where can one drive without speed cameras, where can one roll a fag to enjoy with one's pint (inside the premises)
I suppose the answer would be *anywhere* except 21st Century Britain!

Seeing the rate ANPRS camera's are being bolted to virtually every lamp post in my home town make you wonder just how closely we are being watched...

...I have seen number plates of late that just 'fade to yellow' once they get a good 25+ metres in front of you - black lettering with a silver border - very clever but highly illegal me thinks.

Hm. It's not all hype and paranoia.

Your licence, insurance, and car ownership details are on databases accessible to many people - also, whether you've a vehicle "off road", in storage. Your health records soon will be available centrally. Your TV licence. Your biometric details too, soon. Your offspring's records, ditto. Your "police record". Your earnings, where you work, where you live. Details of the property you live at, including number of rooms, construction, modifications, types of fittings, and many others. Whether you've a (legal) gun or not. Records of your trips abroad. Numbers called by your telephone, landline and mobile, duration of call. Your Internet usage. Possibly your DNA "profile". Who else is living at your house. What you buy with a bank card, or cheque, how much it was, where you bought it. Any bank transaction you make over £5,000 (I think). If "road pricing" goes ahead, movments of your vehicle will be tracked wherever you go. The list goes on. I'm sure there are other examples.

I don't read the papers much and don't feel paranoid, you only need to use your eyes to see the cameras and congestion zones, low emission zones etc.......sure you have your own pet hates. Not just here, went to Austria recently and the coach had a device which enabled the authorities to charge for mileage on the motorways. HJ himself seems to abhor the cameras.

I'd say road pricing is definite, too many of the proletariat doing as they're told and getting rid of their 1.8 gas guzzlers and buying C1/aygo/107's, need to get some more from the demon motorist to make up the shortfall.

As a nice bonus, the equipment fitted to monitor your movements will also be able to calculate your speed at any given point, so another nice little earner the retrospective speeding fines.
The same equipment could also be linked to your cars controller (not the two legged one either) and pre set a maximum speed for the road you are currently on, have to get that one right, enable you to still speed a certain amount, the treasury couldn't stand the losses.

I'm sure the powers will shift the goalposts soon re tax and emissions any way, lots of people jumped on the diesel bandwagon for larger cars, keep the enemy on their toes...

I'll stop now, getting depressed here.

somebody has to pay for lifelong index linked pensions for 6 million public servants (liability £1.4 trillion and rising)

25% of the council tax you pay btw is simply for the pensions of the town hall servants who are supposed to be serving you!

I wish plans for GPS tracking were being muted, rather than mooted, which they most certainly are. I find this very sinister, though it's hard to explain why. ANPR is a similar potential tool and that is already with us. I think the problem is that all this, and other data, is capable of being misused to oppress, control, and persecute, and that being the case it's a matter of when, not if, and it is a just a creeping process that it is probably too late to reverse.

It's just about impossible to opt out unless you transact only in cash, fit cloned plates to your car, use borrowed identities, an unregistered PAYG phone etc....guess what all the criminals do, while the rest of us are being controlled and monitored?

What next to fleece us and control we motorists ? - madf
The Government are going to raise money from selling all data: ID cards, cars and drivers to the Russian mafia.

SO what they are doing to fool us is selectively lose bits of key data on the way so we get used to it.

Then when you get a blackmail attempt asking for £3,000 per month, the Government can say "nothing to do with ID cards/Car tracking/add as applicable : all due to previous data losses.

And blame whomever was minister at the time.

Its seems to be a severe case of the tail wagging the dog

My council announced a trial area where they will be collecting rubbish on a 2 week basis instead of one, nobody I know wants it but 'its for our own good'

Oh yeah and they have also announced plans to start charging people who's bins overflow or who's rubbish gets blown down the street

Now if they collected the damn rubbish once a week it wouldnt.......

People who object to surveillance, tracking and other carp should bear in mind that a switched on mobile phone is in itself a 'tracker'. Your phone knows where you are tells your network and the Government can doubtless access this info if they want to! As for kids being recruited to 'inform' on dog fouling and wheelie bin offences - don't get me started! Stalin and Herr Ulbricht come to mind!
What next to fleece us and control we motorists ? - Hamsafar
I know, this isn't even MI5 spooks doing the tracking and snooping and manipulating, it's marijuana-crazed Socialist Worker activists within local councils who have more spying resources to be used against ordinary citizens than GHCQ used to have against foreign enemies and terrorists.

.....and when the EU wide pay-as-you-go scheme comes into force in a near future thanks to the Galileo satellite, they will also know if, at any time during your journey, you have been speeding. This in addition to your journey details, that is.

So, all those who have mistresses, will have to drive very carefullly in the future....

They certainly can. They nearly bagged someone a while ago, during a certain "conflict", because they knew, or thought they knew, his mobile 'phone number. During a call, they launched a cruise missile at him.

I forecast:-

Variable road use charges - they will be set according to the number of passengers in the car, the weight of the people inside, the time that they are travelling compared with public transport availability, the emmisions created by the vehicle, the wear and tear on the road surface in proportion to the tyre size and impact speed on already existing pot-holes, the number of traffic lights used, the number of times the car has changed gear to use more fuel / accelerate / brake, whether the most direct route was used or not, and the colour of the vehicle according to how much of the sun's rays can be absorbed and turned into re-usbale energy.

Discounts will be given to: politicians (probaby exempt from all charges) , pop stars and footballers who earn more than £1m per year so cannot afford the charges, Tesco clubcard holders (since Tesco will actually BE the government), white van men who park in disabled parking spaces, and cyclists that refrain from cycling on the pavement, going through red lights, use lights and hand signals, and don't go up one way streets the wrong way.

Through on-board car-cams, Police will be able to give you penalty points for wearing a Pringle jersey, denims if you're over 40, and trainers in gaudy colours. Parking regulations will be amended to assume that if a motorist stops for any reason (even at traffic lights) then the central computer will automatically give them a £200 fine, 12 penalty points, and will advise the motorist by text, so that the motorist can get and extra £500 fine and 25 points for using his mobile phone when driving.

Oh - And Top Gear DVDs will be provided with every new vehicle...........
