An RP number is where for example, you need a part for your car, but they only did this part upto a certain time, then changed it to a different part or part number. The RP number helps differentiate if it was before or after this period. For example, it might say for a fuel tank part no "1500 Z5 until Rpo 10373." It means after Rpo 10373,its a different part, in this case, the fuel tank part number would say "1500 EX since Rpo 10374"
On citroens the Rp number is on the offside door pillar, but peugeots...

In the UK, it's more usually referred to as the DAM [Date Application Modification] number.
It's usually printed next to the header tank on the R/H front wing; between the ID plate and the VIN.
