Hi Guys,
My 2006 06 ford focus 1.8 TDCI has started getting intermitant loss of power, erractic idle when this happens and it doesn't rev smoothly.
It will also churn out shed loads of soot when accelerating from standstill / from 35 in 4th say.
The warning light is a cog with a ! in it and it comes on when i try to use the torque example i drop below 45 in 5th then try to accelerate it will bring light on.
Any ideas what this could be? I'm thinking blown turbo pipe, split pipe or similar?
I think it started happening when i had tuning box on car which was connected to the fuel pressure switch. I have recently cleaned my maf and changed my air filter.
Cheers

If the warning light's been on then it will have stored a code - why not try getting the codes read to see what's wrong?
" think it started happening when i had tuning box on car which was connected to the fuel pressure switch."
Oh dear. Better clear some space on your credit card then.... You haven't been running it on veg oil too by any chance???

Hello no didnt have tuning box on car for long. I have had codes read and one was to do with maf which i think is because i disconnected it to test if it was working at all which it was. And the other code was inlet temp sensor which was reading to high or somthing. If i switch engine off and back on engine systems light goes off but will come back on if i drive low in rev range and try to accelerate example 20mph in 3rd gear then try to accelerate.

Righty ho
I'm not saying that this is the solution every time, but my fiance has a 1.8 which suffered from intermittent loss of power and it appeared to be impossible to replicate incidents of this happening (ie sometimes it would lose power, sometimes not). It went back to the Ford garage who were particularly unhelpful (possibly as my fiance is a woman - read on).
However, I had to pick the car up from the garage one day after they were "supposed" to have cured this problem ("Our technicians are highly trained - I think we'll leave it to them Miss" was what she had been told when the RAC towed her in to the garage after the car failed completely). I had a horrendous journey home including nearly being rear ended by a transit (not his fault, he was a long way behind me when I lost power) and almost being t-boned when I tried to turn right (by a little old lady doing 12 mph - again, power just disappeared).
After giving the garage a piece of my mind the following morning (and my fiance had followed me to the garage in my car and saw the black smoke billowing out of hers every time I lost power), they decided to actually try and do a job this time. I objected to paying them £130 odd for a repair that had left the car more dangerous than when she had taken it in.
Guess what? They replaced the fuel pump and hey presto, a different car. More responsive and a 15% increase in fuel economy!!!!!!
Not sure if Ford got a bad batch or if the fuel pump is to a different spec now. But worth a try

Hi I have a 2.0 tdci which has done the same. I have serviced the car, Cleaned MAF and egr valve, the fault disapeared for a while then it has come back worse than ever. There are no warning lights that come on would a fault code still be stored and did a new egr valve solve the problem ??

I too had a problem with power loss and lots of smoke coming out of the exhaust when excellerating. The red cog would come up on the dash occasionally. The problem ended up being a split hose on the turbo intercooler pipe. Main dealer wanted to sell the hose and the pipe but i found a brand new silcone replacement on ebay for around £35.00

I had the same symptoms on mine it was an EGR valve that needed replacing, then the turbo blew and it got potentially expensive, EGR is about 3 to 400 to prelace, turbo is about 500 if you are firm with the garage
