Is a Merc CLK 320 Avantgarde (2001) better than a BMW 530i sport (2001)?
Similarly priced, what would you buy?

Personally, I'd go for the BMW every time.
Just a much more "together" car IMHO.

Does anyone think the CLK is better performance car?
|
Having examined some Mercedes-Benz products from this time period, I'd say the dynamic performance is completely irrelevant. The steel quality, paint effectiveness, design of rust traps and general detailing conspire to make these cars a very questionable purchase indeed.
Buy the BMW.

Just bought a CLK 3.2 convertible and it brings a smile to the face and several compliments too. Can't speak for the other cars but this one cruises sedately or changes into a sprinter when required. The performance is fuss free and the quality -regardless of the fashionable German car knocking - is v.good. Surprisingly the insurance which I was dreading is around £230.....its cheaper than my old C Class diesel...I don't understand it but am happy! Put your your foot down and low 20's are all you'll get for fuel economy but cruise along at 70 mph and mid 30's register. I can get the golf clubs and trolley in the boot at a squeeze and long journeys are pretty comfortable.

I thought this question was from MichaelR before I saw the OP's name. On the thread I would have the BMW

For its time, the BMW was the best executive saloon ever made. The CLK was not, however, the best Sports Coupe ever made.
Buy the BMW. If you dont like the BMW, buy it anyway because after 6 months with it you'll love it.

I still own an older MB, and very wary of the newer models.
Some, not all have corrosion issues which the BM will not unless something has happened to it. I've seen some absolutely lovely MB's of that vintage, and some as rotten as a 70's Lancia, do examine very carefully.
Other than that they are both very capable vehicles, and assuming they are both auto's will be equally pleasant to drive, IMO.
I would bear in mind the recommended indy situation in your area, i wouldn't want the main dealer bills for keeping either of them running properly, and apart from normal service items, major work and correct diagnosis really is for the expert.
Do check if the BM had the optional factory fit indicators....;) sorry just had to...

Thanks all for you replies.
I bought the Merc 320 clk, even though an older model (prior to 2002 version), I loved the sleek unusual look and its in classic MB sliver with factory fit AMG alloys.
Sometimes the old shapes can outclass a newer popular model, Merc seem to do this better than BMW

I love the shape of this model CLK. Unfortunately, a possible house move and petrol prices have put paid to any immediate plans to get one. There is a lot of good info on the MB forums and they can point you towards a good independant garage. When I was researching a purchase, the main advice was to check under seals, around wheelarches etc. for rust. If these are ok, you should have a car that is good for many years to come.
I was looking at a few 99 models on Auto Trader last week - they are seriously cheap now. If house prices go down some more and we can get a bargain, a CLK could be back on the cards....
