Is there a reason why tax discs are different colours? I thought it might have something to do with spotting expired discs but not sure.

It surely must tell you in here tinyurl.com/5rhpqa somewhere, although I couldn't find a reference to colour after 1978.

Thanks but couldn't find an answer there, but have sent them an email.

If they were all of the same colour expired ones would not stand out would they?

There are 3 colours ( I believe) :
pink / blue / purple
08 are pink, 09 are blue, so I reckon 2010 will be purple and 2011 will be pink

Israel has plastic tax discs. Different colour for each calender year with a hole punched out for the relevant expiry month. Difficult to clone (being very sticky plastic) and you end up with a windscreen plastered with stickers on older cars. They are however only about 4cm square.

The colour may represent the year but how could this catch the dodgers. If someones tax disc expired say end of April this would mean that person could go all the way to the following January before being spotted. Seems a useless system to me, the wardens and police have still got to look at the disc close up to see the expiry date.

pullgees
That's why the month is always in very large characters, so all a warden/police need to do is look at the colour and the month.

With computerised records of tax and insurance being used by ANPR cameras why do we still display a tax disc when we don't display (and never have displayed) an insurance disc?
|
All vehicles are showing pink tax discs but how many have expired months previously: too many. It would make more sense to me if the colour changed twice a year. Seeing as they have a colour recognition system they should optimize it so it works better.

In most American states the plate doesn't change from year to year--there is a sticker you put in one corner of the plate showing the month the registration expires, and another sticker showing the year on the opposite corner, so they'll read, for example, "JUL 1988".
If you have the same car for years, the year stickers pile up on each other--a ten year old car will have ten stickers stuck on top of each other in that corner.

By the way, is there somewhere where I can see what a UK tax disc looks like?

Yes, just google UK Tax Disc and select the images option and it'll bring up plenty of examples.
