Yesterday I filled up at a fuel station that I only visit occasionally. Right from the start the pump kept cutting out prematurely no matter how gently I pressed the trigger or how much I withdrew the nozzle. The attendant said it was due partly to the speed of their pumps, but was due mainly to a combination of my car model and my technique. He said that all I had to do was rotate the nozzle in the direction of the back of the car and that this would prevent the pump cutting out prematurely. I said I would try it the next time. He even offered to give me a demonstration the next time I went there so he must have been very confident he wouldn't end up with egg on his face. We shall see!

I have this all the time with our Punto`s. If you were put the nozzle fully in and fully squeeze the trigger, it would blow back like a geyser and at best, you would have a litre of derv down your leg. Nice cut off from the nozzles of course - after the spurt.
Its embarrassing really if there`s a queue and the 10 gallon tank is empty, having to peer into the filler neck with the nozzle sufficiently pulled out as to actually see the fuel slowly going in.
Yep, you can twizzle the nozzel uppermost, but this leaves your er.. `wallet` area facing the open neck of the geyser unshielded.
I`ve learnt to do this without shoes and legs being in line of the filler neck... but what a farce.
I`d really like to see the chief executives of car manufacturers having to fully squeezing the nozzle on their (diesel) cars in front of film crews at the models launch.....

I don't care about my shoes so I leave them on.

Just realised I`ve posted about the opposite situation to the subject line..
Sorry, L`esc..

My Escort will fill from a truck pump at full blast-a well designed filler pipe unlike some makes. Can cause problems at some garages when you have to explain it's that one over there, not on one of the pumps under the canopy.

They are both embarassing problems that need to be sensitively treated by a trained counsellor.

Well.. We covered it in basics at college, I was trying to remember a book reference but can`t.. It seems those memory areas are now holding information on 0w30 engine oil instead.
Just as well perhaps ;)

Why don't we have the automatic pumps like Germany instead we have to stand there and breath in the carsogenic fumes.

Sorry L`esc..
No probs, oilrag.

I have the same problem sometimes. Turning the nozzle around so it is at a different angle also helps. Turning it upside down like you would if you were filling from the wrong side also seems to be less troublesome. If you stand behind the car when doing this any dribbling won't get on you.

I get this with the Mustang with some stations and not others. What I do is kink the hose in one hand (V shape) to slow the flow whilst pulling the trigger with the other.
The garage owner always blame the car and technique but at other stations using the same technique I dont have a problem. Generally the old pumps are OK but the brand new ones are more troublesome

I used to like the old pumps you could sort of clip in the on position and let go. This was ideally timed so that you could slope off a safe distance and still have enough time to have a fag. They would still cut out when the tank was full. Probably not allowed now by that "Elf from Safety" fella.

They work by air being drawn in by a hole in a small vein opening at the end of the nozzle. If the air gets cut off due to being submerged in fuel, the trigger cuts out. The unwanted cutting-out is when the fuel causes a storm in the filler neck because of it's angle or anti-syphon insert and splashes into the air pipe. Try pulling the nozzle out further so just the tip is in.
If you do find a position where it works, you can lock diesel nozzles on (but not petrols) if you take your own stick, a paperclip is too bendy, but an old allen key or thin nail is OK, I use piano wire bent into a T shape

We put the filler cap in to jam the trigger.

They still have those in South Africa - you get served, and the attendant leaves the pump filling the car and washes the windows. This happens at every filling station.

I'm not saying I'm old but .......... I used to like the old pumps with a proper analogue dial where the attendant turned a handle to dispense the fuel, and you could chat with him while he was doing it! tinyurl.com/6zdoh8
