Okay, enforce the law. But £70? Over-staying on a pay-and-display is only £35 around here. Sorry for the long URL. Tinyurl failed to tiny-ise my link.

To be honest anyone who can't park within 50cm of the kerb should lose their license.

50 cm = 19 inches i.e. over 1 and half feet

If you park at distance more than 50 cm from kerb, you're almost at middle of the road ;)

Sounds eminently sensible to me, the least of our worries with all the new snooping powers being introduced next year!

Supermarkets, retail parks, park and ride, multi-storeys, surface car parks, garage at home - I very rarely park on street these days.

I notice that in the link above they are measuring from the wheel rim to the kerb. Surely the immediate defence is to measure from the widest part of the car - probably the edge of the wing mirror, provided it does not autofold on parking?

well surely by that logic if you park close to the kerb and your wing mirror is over the pavement you could be fined for parking on the pavement.........didnt really think that one though did ya :-)

"The DoT is to authorise councils to penalise drivers who park more than 50cm or 19.7" from the kerb. "

on the second photo on the link the chap is measuring from the centre of the wheel to the top of the kerb (at an ANGLE) hardly fair is it? but like most people i agree if you cant park within 50cm of the kerb you shouldnt be driving

As my mother would say "that's not parking, that's abandoning!".

That was a posed photograph, and the person shown may have been a male model who didn't know anything about Pythagoras' theorem. I'm sure the people who will be doing the measurement in practice will be properly trained.

Looking at the name of the link above, isn't this more about stopping double or parallel parking, rather than fining the driver using a proper space who has trouble planting it 3ins from the kerb?

What about diagonal parking? Front wheels or rear?

Reminds me of my driving test examiner's comment when I parked at the end of the test- "Do you run excursions to the kerb?". He passed me then, although if he'd read this news item that morning he might not have...
