The big thing cost wise is to book in advance, by more than a month if you can to get the cheapest prices. Use BAA Advance which will give you quotes for short, medium, long stay and valet parking. Book in advance and the medium stay price is not much different in price to long stay. All the parking you can walk to is now short stay - £30 a day IIRC, before advance booking discount.
An added benefit of advance booking is that you don't have to mess with the payment machinery on exit - your reg number is recognised and you just take the ticket on entry and stick on to it for the exit on your return (on the medium stay anyway).

Pink Elephant (long stay) works well, but naughty BAA whack up charges for school hols, e.g. half term in Oct which is around 30% dearer, regardless of how far ahead you book.
