Sorry for the delay; but I just couldn't get this page to load last night.

That's a remarkable range of codes you have there, did they all appear at the same time?

What problems were you having and what fuel are you running it on. Has it ever run on anything other than pump diesel?

only getting back to you now as i had to go out of town on sat. the problem began with the car just not starting now and then hot or cold didnt matter. got it diaognosed was told to replace high pressure pump [waste of £250] didnt make any diff. changed the fuel filter housing and loop pipe at the bottom of fhe housing which had a dent in it, the car has started every time since. as a precaution i also did a leak back test which all had a reading of about 23-25mls. the engine managment light came on and i got it diagonosed again and was giving them codes. the fuel i run it on is top quality. to my knowledge it has never run on anything else.

Getting the picture now. Why does everyone automatically blame the HP pump - unless there are steel, not brass, fragments in the filter?

The most likely candidate for an intermittent non-start is the P0340 cam-sensor code. The sensors fail, the plugs and wiring age, the gap is critical and the fingers get bent.

The MAP and turbo-control codes P0235 and P0243 are unlikely to have any effect on starting. P1138 and P0230 could have been thrown up by low rail pressure after fitting the new filter[?] and you've got a problem, P1108, with the low-speed cooling fan relay.

Wipe the codes and see what returns.

thanks for that screwloose, going to wipe the codes tomorrow and see what returns. at the minute no starting problems. mite change both the camshaft and crankshaft sensors if that code re appears. will let you now.....Cheers

hi screwloose, regarding the 20hdi codes. igot them cleared today and when started, within 10 seconds the p0340 cam/crankshaft code appeared. Have drove the car all day with no problem until tonite and the eml has re appeared. the only thing ive noticed tonite it seems that the engine when you rev it seems a bit slow in returning to idle. Any sugestions what i mite try now? cheers

If you're still getting a cam sensor code after changing the sensor; then either get someone who knows how to use an oscilloscope to examine the signal and overlay it with the crank sensor signal to check their relationship...

...Or; check the plug/wiring and, particularly, the fingers on the cam sensor reluctor plate; they get bent and the clearance is utterly critical. What method was used to set-up the sensor; paper disc or pimple?

dont now what method was used to set it up. I only have this car a short time, contacted the previous owner and he said that a new camshaft sensor was fitted. Would a auto electrican be the best option ?

Only a hunch; but I'd get someone to check that sensor plate for a bent finger before getting too deep. The clearance between the hammer-headed fingers and the sensor should be nothing - they actually shear-off the clearance pimple on a new sensor.

ok. thanks for your advice screwloose. will get it checked out and let you now what the out come is. Cheers for now

hi guys, more problems with this unreliable expert 20hdi. when you switch it off nothing would start it for at least 20minutes. No engine managment lite on. diagnostic shows code p0190 p0230 and p0235. I have replaced the fuel cut of switch. Do you think i might have wiring connection problems?

It would be better to continue on your original thread here:-

as it contains a lot of the background info. Copy and paste this one on to the end of that and we'll take it from there.
