I could only find one 2008 model (BMW X6) in the list, and of that they said "Once again BMW pushes the boundaries of taste and ability, with an on-road SUV that's fast, luxurious and ugly - and utterly pointless into the bargain."
|
How can a list of the top 50 German cars include both concept cars and the BMW X6 but completely miss out the Mercedes S Class, surely at its time one of the finest cars in the world, and any variant of the BMW 5 Series?
|
An earlier S class is included
Some lovely cars there, although why the BMW bubble cars? Someone's idea of a joke, perhaps?

Am I the only person that finds German saloons b*ll-achingly boring?
Give me a gull wing merc or an Auto Union or something else pre-war. Now there are some cars worth looking at.

Well, beauty *IS* in the eye etc., etc., I personally find a lot of these cars terrific but not necessarily The Best German cars.
I've worked on & driven many of them, so perhaps I'm just an olde senti-mental fool.

On clicking the link, got a pic of a (garishly painted though) example of the NSU-designed VW K70, a car I liked a lot when I drove one in Africa. Much much nicer machine than the very boring first Passat which replaced it.
Trouble with really good cars is they aren't often profitable, because punters don't appreciate them.
Much obliged, Dawg...

Lud mentioning NSU reminded me that my brother once briefly owned an NSU Prinz. Whether this was through poverty or downright foolishness, I now can't recall.
However I do recall that the thing frequently broke down and can remember the two of us pushing it down various roads with my brother commenting that it was "another example of fine German engineering".

Some odd choices there but each to their own. Those old 60s W108 S-Class Mercs though, astonishing machines. Timeless styling, a lovely interior complete with wood trimmed A pillars, and available with a 6.3 litre V8 which at the time must have felt like flying.
