The handbook simply specifies 5w/30 and API SL.

The under bonnet sticker says use Shell Helix, but the Shell site gives four different types "specially formulated to meet the needs of BMW/Vauxhall/VW/ etc."

Why are all these produced?
What would be the effect of using, say, a BMW spec in a VW?

Just advertising,a certain very large franchise in the North which handles just about every make of car uses two types of oil synthetic and normal and that goes in everthing from Beemers to Puntos.
