Road tax question - jimmyybob
Hi i have recently bought a car second hand and filled out the relevant parts of the V5.
Now i need to tax the car i have an mot and insurance but no V5 apart from the half the seller gave me.
Can i still tax it or will i have to wait weeks for the new V5 to come through.
I cant simply fill out an application at the post office as the seller has already sent off his half.

Take the half of the V5 that you retained into the post office, it should have a barcode on that they will scan and allow you to tax your car. I did it last week with a car aquired from my father (yes he was so tight as to not even tax it for me ;-) )

You might want to wait until the 1st August. Otherwise you'll only get 11 months and 2 days worth of RFL (or 5 months 2 days) but still be expected to pay for the full 12 months / 6 months - if you get my drift.

It's only new cars where you can apply for a full 12 months / 6 months RFL.

... and if you are pinged in a silent check before 31.7 and having taxed the vehicle from 1.8 you may be guilty of a false declaration to obtain an excise licence if you have not declared use before 1.8.

Serious offence in the Excise calender and YOU WILL P.U.
