Generally speaking (well, I know there are exceptions)
Japanese cars have better mechanical bits but their interior even outside look is often bland
French cars are dodgy mechanical/electrical parts, their shape or interior is eye catching.
So, why no one thinks of putting a Japanese engine in French cars? Then we can have best of both worlds?
Why can't we have best of both worlds?
|
Because they put French engines in Japanese cars and assemble them in Sunderland.
|
|
Nissan once put an Alfa engine in a Japanese body shell - that rusted as well, but the engine was fine.
|
It's not just the engine - it's the entire electrical system that some European manufacturers appear to have problems with.
What the Japanese should do is employ European stylists (except the one that did the BMW 3-series ;-)

"So, why no one thinks of putting a Japanese engine in French cars?"
They have - Citroen C1/Pug 107.
Do Nissan engines now find their way into Renaults?
|
I wish one day we could buy cars by configuring our own specification!
Nowadays many cars share common parts, but that is to aid manufacturers rather than benefit of consumers!
We should be able to choose body style, engine, seating, dashboard layout and then "mix & match" to create our dream cars :)
Every component should conform to some standard interface (like USB devices for computers).

Well ill take and Alfa V6, have the japs re-engineer it for durability but to keep the character plus let them do the electrics, then link it to a hybrid drive and a nice 5 spd auto box, have all that slapped into a Fiat Bravo ( just a great looking but discreet car )and have Rolls finish off the interior.
Id then like all my customer care done by Lexus!
|
OK then - BMW 335 engine in a Citroen C6 along with all electrics shoehorned in by Lexus, suspension tweaked by a Lotus/Alfa joint venture, good dollop of BMW paint. The dealer of course would be Skoda. Residuals by MINI, seat design by Volvo, any woodwork by Jaguar and the Je ne sais ce qui by Morgan and finally a ten year warranty by Hyundai ??

But that's ok - you wouldn't want everyone having one .......for the masses:-
Alfa 159 with er....an Alfa engine, Alfa suspension, electrics made by Lexus, Skoda dealer, MINI residuals, Proper seats, Hyundai warranty
|
Okay then I'll have a B6 Audi A4 quattro (discreet), tuned Audi 5-cyl turbo engine with modern EFI fitted. Skoda dealer, Hyundai warranty.
|
...and BMW paint maybe ??
|
Oh go on then, just as long as I can choose something other than that metallic bile colour, as seen on an M3 this morning..

I have to say that the various shades of silver I had over the last few incarnations always came up a treat and certainly on the 330d still belies the miles (and speeds) its been driven at.
