I have been trying (fruitlessly) to obtain a green card from Direct Line to cover Morocco which was always possible a few years ago.
I suggested that even without I would be covered '3rd-party'. I was then told that this was not the case. However, in the policy doucument it states that cover is for:-
"any country which the Commission of the European Community approves as meeting the requirements of Article 7(2) of the European Community Directive on Insurance of Civil Liabilities arising from using motor vehicles (number 72/166/CEE)."
Does anyone know which countries outside the EU are covered? I have searched the web and all policies seem to use similar phraseology without listing countries.
p.s. Can any insurer sell me a green card for Morocco - preferably 'stand alone', although I would consider moving from Direct Line all-together.
Thanks.

Please excuse any hint of sarcasm! If your insurance company are quoting you words out of THEIR policy, which you have bought, then they should be able to interpret the meaning of what they wrote. If they can't/won't then just ask to speak to someone more senior or get them to find the answer and ring you back. I hope your timescale for needing this cover is not too pressing? I can see it taking some sorting! Good luck!

No, they didn't quote this but I lifted it from the policy. The 'advisor' did say that Morocco wasn't covered ' because it's in Africa'!
I'm trying to get some more information before getting back to them but, unfortunately, I DO need the cover fairly soon.

I imagine the EU directive mentioned covers countries like Switzerland than are in Europe but not in the EU. Morocco is in North Africa so I can't see this directive applying. If they DO cover Morocco then it will probably be for the most basic public liability. Proper cover will probably be obtained via a specialist broker on a separate policy.

If your Insurer won't cover you and issue a Green card (which is required in Morrocco) you will need to change your Insurer. Alternatively you should be able to buy Insurance at your port of entry

Thanks, I have seen this and Morocco is covered by the Green card system - but not by my insurer. They can obviously pick and choose which countries to cover!

Well they are providing automatically cover for any country covered by the EU directive (which is the list of countries for which a Green card is not required). Anywhere else would be an extension of cover and would have to be specifically agreed by them.

My gripe is that they do not state which countries are covered by the EU directive (and it is not just EU countries).
I have travelled to Morocco at least 5 times (as recently as 2 years ago) with Direct Line have never had a problem getting Green card until this year.
Has the directive changed? Or are they following a different one to previously. I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that the cover I once had would be similar on renewal.
