After a lengthy search in the Go Compare comparator website, I find the best online quote for me is from First Alternative, £236 with £450 excess. My current insurer, Equity Red Star (which has covered me for at least a decade so far and does not appear on the site) offers, £340 with £100 excess . First Alternative has a 5-star rating on the site. Can anyone comment on this company please?

No, but do you realise that those quotes are pretty equal?

Changes the excesses and the premiums would probably more or less match.

There must be some mismatch between expectations and fulfilment, or the people who register their opinions are inherent grouches - the average rating appears to be 3/10 and I couldnt find anybody being rated more than 6.1/10 for anything ;-)

First Alternative is the first alternative that Esure send you to if you cannot meet the low risk criteria used by Esure. As you can guess, First Alternative is their sister Company set up to quote for the higher risk profiles.
The last I knew, these two Companies were owned by Halifax-Bank-of-Scotland.

"Where the brands have been deliberately set up to target different customers, you?re more likely to find a difference. For instance Esure, which itself is part owned by HBOS, has a complementary brand, First Alternative, that was set up to look after a different customer base (just think of those irritating TV adverts, with Michael Winner in drag).
Adrian Webb, a spokesman for the two companies, explains. ?Esure caters for the middle market. It wants responsible drivers with at least four years? no claims discount. First Alternative looks after everything else, such as drivers with posh cars or tainted records.? Knowing which brand wants you will make a difference financially. Type the same driver details into both Esure and First Alternative?s quotation engines and you?ll get slightly different premiums reflecting the fact that one wants you more than the other. "

So I now find! In the end, I went back to my existing insurers who knocked £20 off, which I accepted, when "online" was mentioned to them.
