Is there a problem with the mk4 diesel engine on a 1.9e sdi, dropping a valve onto piston and damaging engine completely.

Has yours dropped a valve?

Some SDi octavia taxis have done huge (300K+) mileages without problems, its usually the gearbox that lets go first.

The problem is that I took the wife's car into a vw specialist garage as we could not get the car to start, they advised us that the problem was with the hydrolic tapits, which we agreed they could change, they advised me that they managed to get the engine running for a good 10 to 20 minutes, without it even being moved out of the workshop. Then the engine stopped and when they checked they found that it had dropped a valve causing complete damage to the head and piston.
They are trying to say that this is not there fault and that we've got to pay.
We are just wondering if anyone has encountered the same problems?

Did they get it running before or after they had changed the hydraulics? If they hadn't then they could say it was an accident waiting to happen. If they HAVE changed the hydraulics I would say a dropped valve is down to them.

Yes, they have changed the hydraulic tapits and reseated the valves due to carbon build up.

Did they fit a new timing belt or just retension the old one..........to the point that it broke and valves met pistons!

The fitted a new timing belt and kit, when they changed the hydralic tapits.
