Morning all,
I'm off surfing this weekend (hooray!) and will be doing the above route late Thursday evening.
Does anyone have any route suggestions? TomTom is sayin M23-M25-M4 etc, but I was wondering if there is an alternative to going round that way.
Thanks in advance (as always)

A/M27 to Southampton, A36 round Salisbury, pick up A303 all the way to Honiton where it joins A30 and onwards to M5 at Exeter. Reasonably direct, and fairly quick over the whole journey, unless of course local folk know of serious roadworks along the way.
Assuming your leaving evening as you say, i wouldn't expect a problem that way, do watch out for the dreaded cameras though.
Far more interesting than that awful and very long way round motorway journey.
I have gone along the coast road before ...A31 and then A35 via Dorchester, but though a very scenic route in places is awfully slow.
Safe journey.

watch out for average speed cameras on the M27 just after M275 turn off, 50 mph through the road works. Only about 2 miles but very tedious anyway

Cheers chaps. Exactly the kind of advice I was looking for.
Hopefully the German plates on the Astra will help if I am 'blitzed' by a Gatso.

Did the Brighton to Southampton bit last week and had an easy trip without too much traffic. Agree with GB on the rest of the way but do beware of speed cameras on the A303. Bear in mind that if there is a traffic problem on your return, then you could opt for the lower route (A35/A31) - which I have done if the traffic reports are poor due to volume of traffic.
Enjoy your weekend.

When you get to Cornwall - don't restrict yourself to Fistral beach there are loads of good beaches around with good surf such as Godrevy/Gwithian and Sennen. I am not a surfer but these (and other) beaches are very popular with surfers.

Out of curiosity, why would the SatNav suggest M4 after M25 anyway when going M3 - A303 etc would be 30 minutes quicker than using the M4?
|
At a guess, because M4 connects up with M5, which M3 doesn't, and the SatNav would rather stick to motorways.
May depend on how priorities have been set in the SatNav.
